The Mueller Gallery at Caldwell University is excited to present Afield, an exhibition featuring the work of painter Annie Norbeck. The exhibition will be held from Friday, September 4th, to Wednesday, September 30, 2026. An artist’s talk will take place at the Mueller Gallery on Wednesday, September 23 from 5-6pm followed by a reception from 6:00-8:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
In Afield, painter Annie Norbeck explores the visual and emotional landscape of being far from home. This recent body of work investigates the specific compression that occurs when a stable horizon is viewed through the window of a moving car or train, dissolving familiar terrain into arrangements of light, color, and form. Rather than documenting specific geographic destinations, Norbeck treats the land as a shifting record of distance, transience, and memory.
Norbeck’s process begins with foundational layers, which she gradually refines through a deliberate focus on mood and composition. Working in oil across a range of scales and surfaces, she creates environments that feel simultaneously familiar and elusive. By balancing physical landscape cues with internal psychological states, these paintings inhabit a searching intermediary space, navigating the tension between geographical disconnection and the human desire for grounding.
Annie Norbeck (b 1979, Chicago suburbs, US) is an oil painter informed by place and the relationship between space, color, and line. Depending on the subject or emotion being conveyed, her work spans representation to abstraction. Norbeck holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and has also studied at the Pratt Institute, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, and the Yard School of Art. She has exhibited in solo and group shows nationally, and her work is held in private collections in the US and internationally. Norbeck maintains a studio at Manufacturers Village in East Orange, NJ.
The Mueller Gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
