Core Values & History

Our Mission
Founded in 1939 by the Sisters of Saint Dominic, Caldwell University promotes intellectual, spiritual, and aesthetic growth to a diverse population and welcomes all cultures and faith traditions.
Inspired by St. Dominic de Guzman and our Catholic heritage, we transform students’ lives by preparing them through the liberal arts and professional studies to think critically, pursue truth, and contribute to a just society.
Respect. Integrity. Community.Excellence.
Core Values
The core values of Caldwell University emanate from the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, the life of Saint Dominic de Guzman, the Charism of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell, and the Four Pillars of Dominican Life. In response to St. Dominic’s desire to pursue “truth” through education, Caldwell University commits itself to the following core values:
RESPECT
Respecting the sacred dignity of all creation, we call ourselves to have responsible relationships with each other and with the earth. We value diversity and believe it enriches the University community.
INTEGRITY
We commit ourselves to honesty and professional excellence in all interactions and relationships.
COMMUNITY
Valuing relationships, collaboration, and inclusivity, we extend this spirit through intentional connections within the campus community and beyond.
EXCELLENCE
Aware that each person has a role in creating a just and compassionate global community, we seek to develop a love for lifelong learning and a commitment to the search for knowledge, truth, and solutions to problems.

Catholic Identity
Caldwell University was founded by the Dominican Sisters in 1939 and inspired by the 800-year legacy of St. Dominic. That Catholic Dominican tradition lives on today through four key pillars—prayer, study, community, and service—which work together to guide students on a journey of personal growth. From our university Masses and community gatherings to our Fall retreat and community service opportunities, Caldwell offers our students many ways to celebrate, explore, and grow their faith.
Inspired by St. Dominic de Guzman and our Catholic heritage, we transform students’ lives by preparing them through the liberal arts and professional studies to think critically, pursue truth, and contribute to a just society.
Our History
Caldwell University was founded in 1939 as a Catholic liberal arts college for women. Over the decades, the institution evolved significantly—becoming coeducational in 1985, launching its first graduate program in 1993, and officially earning university status in 2014. Caldwell has continued to innovate in academics, becoming the first in New Jersey to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts and later developing pioneering programs in art therapy, business, education, nursing, and applied behavior analysis, including the launch of its first doctoral program in 2009.
In recent years, Caldwell has expanded its reach and impact, particularly through its designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and multiple competitive federal grants supporting STEM education and underserved student populations. Today, Caldwell offers a wide array of undergraduate and graduate degrees—particularly in health, science, education, and business—along with certificate programs designed to prepare students for evolving professional fields.
