Dentistry

The degree required for a dentist is either Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) or Doctor of Dental Sciences (DDS); both usually take four years.  With either degree, a dentist can enter the various dental specialties with the appropriate training.   Dental programs generally require students to have a 4-year undergraduate degree.

*the student may begin the professional program before completing the bachelor’s degree

Apply: Junior year at Caldwell.

Benefit: If the student is accepted, they enroll in the dental program after their junior year.  The first year of the dental program can be transferred back to Caldwell and count as the fourth year of the bachelor’s degree.

Application Requirements: GPA > 3.5.  The student has to first be interviewed and then endorsed by Caldwell’s PreProfessional Evaluation Committee early in the summer after their sophomore year.  Rutgers will then interview qualified applicants. If the student is granted conditional admission, they have to submit their Dental Admission Test (DAT) test scores (> 20) by January 1 of their junior year, and apply to the dental program through AADSAS by December 1 of their junior year.

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Dental Medicine, (4+4 Program)
*the student must complete the bachelor’s degree before beginning the professional program

Apply: As a high school senior applying to Caldwell, applicants must select this specific program on the Common App. Can also be a sophomore student who has completed between 30 and 65 credits at Caldwell. All applicants should apply to LECOM’s Early Admission Program (EAP) here. An interview with LECOM is part of the application process.

Benefit: If the student is accepted, they know that their spot is reserved as long as they meet admission requirements.

Initial screening requirements: SAT > 1240, ACT > 26, GPA > 3.5; interview. If a Caldwell sophomore, add science GPA > 3.2, grade of C or higher in all required courses. 

Requirements for admission into the medical program after the junior year: Overall GPA > 3.4, science GPA > 3.2, grade of C or higher in all required courses; DAT taken by Dec. 1 with scores > 17.
