Caldwell University is a private, accredited Catholic university in Caldwell, NJ offering bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees and a vibrant campus life complete with rewarding activities, clubs, and service opportunities.
The Caldwell University Athletic Department is committed to the academic success of its student-athletes. The Department has developed the Cougar Academic Enrichment Program in an effort to provide support to student-athletes and their academic goals and help them persist to graduation. The Cougar Academic Enrichment Program consists of four components that, when combined with other University services, create a complete academic support system for our student-athletes.
Component One: Student-Athlete Desire Perhaps the most important aspect of a student-athlete’s academic success is their desire to do well. If a student-athlete wants to succeed and is willing to put effort into their academics, the other components of the program will be there to support them and see them through to graduation.
Component Two: Student-Athlete Responsibilities Certain populations of student-athletes will have to meet weekly and/or monthly requirements in an effort to create good study habits and learn academic skills (e.g., time management, test-taking strategies, etc.). These responsibilities will consist of the following:
Team Study Hall Team Study Hall will consist of all members of a particular team meeting at a designated time and location for a weekly one-hour session. The session details will be determined by the coach, and the session will be monitored by the coaching staff. Required for:
All first-year students
Transfers with a transfer GPA below 3.0
Upperclass SA with a cumulative GPA below 2.5
Others as required
Individual Study Hall An individual study hall will be required for one hour on a weekly basis. Without exception, the individual study hour will take place in the Cougar Enrichment Center. Individuals will be required to bring legitimate work and remain on task during this time. If a student-athlete is not staying on task, they will be asked to leave. Required for:
First-year students with an NCAA core course GPA below 3.5
Transfers with a transfer GPA below 3.0
Upperclass SA with a cumulative GPA below 2.5
Others as required
* Coaches may require additional study hall hours for student-athletes in their program.
Monthly In-Person Check-Ins A once-per-month check-ins will be scheduled with the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and Student Athlete Advisor. During these meetings, the student will share academic goals, progress in courses, and similar items. Check-Ins will be scheduled via Navigate360.
Upperclass SA with a cumulative GPA below 2.5
Others as required
Monthly Workshops Student athletes will be encouraged to attend one campus-sponsored workshop per month. A list of workshops will be distributed at the start of each semester.
First-year students with an NCAA core course GPA below 3.5
Transfers with a transfer GPA below 3.0
Tutoring Tutoring will be required for one hour each week. Tutoring will utilize campus tutoring services and will be scheduled through Navigate360.
Upperclass SA with a cumulative GPA below 2.5
Component Three: Monitoring Student-athlete academic progress will be monitored throughout the semester utilizing campus communication through CougarLink, Navigate360, or direct reports from faculty. The two main periods for monitoring occur during the fourth week of classes and after mid-semester. Coaches will be notified of any faculty concerns and, depending on the degree of concern, will inform student-athletes that they need to meet with the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and Student Athlete Advisor. During this meeting, an academic plan will be put into place. An academic plan may consist of required tutoring, academic coaches, increased study hall hours, and/or other interventions.
Component Four: One-on-ones While sometimes required of some student-athletes, one-on-one meetings with the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and Student Athlete Advisor are available to any student-athlete who is interested and at any frequency they desire. These meetings can help the students in a number of ways and can focus on a variety of topics. Student-athletes often use these meetings for accountability and for help with time management and development of study schedules. Student-athletes who are interested in scheduling such meetings should reach out to the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and Student Athlete Advisor or schedule the meeting using Navigate360.
