Caldwell, NJ – Caldwell University’s pioneering approach to artificial intelligence (AI) leadership took center stage at the Independent Colleges and Universities of New Jersey (ICUNJ) Annual Presidents’ Retreat on June 10, 2025, where Jennifer Fischer, Caldwell’s Chief AI Officer and Director of the Institute for Innovation and Emerging Technologies, shared insights on heading responsible AI adoption in higher education.

As the first higher education institution in New Jersey to establish a dedicated Chief AI Officer role, Caldwell University has positioned itself at the forefront of both innovative AI-integrated pedagogy and strategic AI implementation across university operations. The university’s unique AI leadership model, which provides comprehensive oversight across university-wide AI strategy and responsible adoption, served as a focal point for discussion among participating university presidents.

“Our AI Leadership model represents a fundamental shift in how universities approach emerging technologies,” said Fischer during the panel discussion titled “What University Presidents Need to Know about AI.” “By establishing dedicated leadership for AI strategy and implementation, we’re not just adopting new tools—we’re transforming how our institution operates, teaches, and serves our students and community.”

The annual retreat brought together presidents from New Jersey’s independent colleges and universities to discuss critical issues facing higher education. The AI panel highlighted the growing importance of strategic technology leadership in academic institutions, with Caldwell’s model serving as a practical example for other universities considering similar initiatives.

President Jeff Senese emphasized the university’s commitment to innovation leadership, stating, “Caldwell University has always been dedicated to preparing our students for the future, and that means being at the forefront of technological advancement. Our investment in AI leadership isn’t just about staying current—it’s about leading the conversation and ensuring our students graduate with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an AI-driven world.”

Fischer’s presentation outlined key components of Caldwell’s AI Leadership framework, including strategic planning, faculty development, student engagement, and ethical considerations. The model emphasizes responsible adoption practices that align with the university’s mission and values while maximizing the benefits of AI across academic and administrative functions.

“What sets Caldwell apart is our holistic approach to AI integration,” Fischer explained. “We’re not just implementing AI tools in isolation—we’re developing a comprehensive strategy that touches every aspect of university life, from classroom instruction to student services to administrative operations.”

The Institute for Innovation and Emerging Technologies, under Fischer’s direction, serves as the central hub for AI initiatives at Caldwell University. The Institute comprises three Centers, each with a different focus—learning innovation, responsible innovation, and workforce innovation—as well as interdisciplinary programming and research that enhance the educational experience and prepare students for careers in an increasingly digital world.

The impact of the presentation was immediately evident, with ICUNJ President Steve Reynolds providing enthusiastic feedback following the event and emphasizing the value of the insights shared during the retreat. “It’s clear that universities across New Jersey and beyond are recognizing the need for dedicated AI leadership. Caldwell is proud to be leading this conversation and sharing our experiences with other institutions,” noted President Senese.

The ICUNJ Annual Presidents’ Retreat serves as a vital forum for collaboration and knowledge sharing among New Jersey’s independent colleges and universities. This year’s focus on AI reflects the growing recognition of artificial intelligence as a transformative force in higher education.

As universities nationwide grapple with the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies, Caldwell University’s AI leadership model provides a roadmap for strategic implementation and responsible adoption. The university’s commitment to innovation continues to position it as a leader in preparing students for the future while maintaining its core educational values.
