Peer Advising
The Advisement office, located in the C.A.R.E.S Center, is recruiting a few outstanding upper-class students for our peer advising program for the 2017-2018 academic year. Peers will be given extensive training to provide accurate and friendly service, and the ability to address a variety of student questions and concerns with objectivity.
Duties and Responsibilities
The bulk of peer advisor responsibilities will be divided into three areas:
- Walk-In Coverage: Every peer advisor is responsible for working weekly scheduled walk-in hours. These hours will offer students the chance to have some of their advising questions answered from a current student. These inquires may include:
- Discussion of majors available at Caldwell
- Creating basic study plans and course selection
- Answer questions about course pre-requisites and other graduation requirements
- Referral to relevant student organizations and departmental resources
- Administrative: Peer Advisors may have a significant administrative, programming, or marketing duty that they would be responsible for. These duties include: Student Director, Programming Coordinator, Statistical Analyst and Marketing Manager. If you have a specific interest in one of these categories, please indicate your interest in your written response.
- Group Advising and Programming: Peer Advisors also present academic related programs to students during activity blocks and evening hours in teams or with professional advisors. This may include advising sessions in the residence halls, time management training, Majors/Minors Night, Major Decision workshop series, participation in Freshman Seminar as well as other programs to be offered throughout the year.
Position Descriptions
Student Director
Description: The student director will work in collaboration with the Director of the Peer Advisor Program in managing the day to day administrative aspects of the Peer Advising Program. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Coordinating Fall Training
- Developing and delivering on-going training throughout the academic year
- Creating walk-in advising schedule
- Managing Payroll
- Directing peer advisor recruitment process
Programming Coordinator
Description: The programming coordinator will work in collaboration with the Student Director/ Director of Peer Advisor Program in managing all aspects of the peer advising program agenda. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Development of academic related programming
- Reaching out to student organizations and RAs about available programs
- Managing all aspect of program delivery including:
- Scheduling and assigning Peer Advising Staff
- Creating assessment instruments and reporting results
- Collaborating with the marketing managers to market peer advisor led programming
Marketing Manager(s)
Description: The Marketing Manager will work in collaboration with the Program Coordinator in managing all marketing initiatives for the Advisement Office. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Working with the Program Coordinator to develop a marketing strategy for established fall and spring semester programs
- Developing advertising campaigns for academic advising and the Advisement Office programming initiatives
- Creating advising materials (signs, posters, etc.)
- Monitoring and upkeep of the Peer Advisor social media platforms
Minimum Qualifications: Ability to demonstrate creativity.
Statistical Analyst
Description: The statistical analyst will compile and decipher both qualitative and quantitative evaluations. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Creating assessment instruments and reporting results
- Compile data on peer advising and the Advisement Office events/programs
- Create a semester usage report for peer advising events
- Keep track of qualitative and quantitative data and report to the Director of Peer Advising
- Coordinate program evaluations and collection
Minimum Qualifications: Quantitative major or minor
