Thesis Title: Mi Infancia

Surface Design is any type of artwork (pattern, illustration, hand lettering, etc.) made by a designer that is intended to be applied to a surface to enhance its visual appearance and/or functionality. Throughout my childhood I have been surrounded by different patterns. From the shirts my mom would wear down to the sheets on my bed. Although it was not recognized at the time, these patterns were without a doubt the foundation to the way I would design today.

The concept of pattern making is so intriguing. You can take something as simple as a circle and create different intricate designs. These could potentially be around for years to come. Studying the evolution of these patterns, I can say that even though the times are different. We do not go very far from our principles and elements of design. Some designs might be a bit different but they originally all come from the same place. I want these pieces to be something that people will look forward to purchasing someday.

My pieces were inspired by Sonia Delaunay. She was a French artist who focused on creating pieces using all kinds of circles. I decided to focus on her color palette from some of her pieces like “Dubonnet” and “Rhythm Colour.” These colors give me a sense of comfort and happiness, like my childhood does. I hope to convey these emotions through the colors and patterns I created.
