Students are encouraged to take part in a variety of special academic opportunities based on their academic interests, particular situation, and sometimes, their GPA.

Adult Undergraduate Students who have been at Caldwell University in the past and may not have done well academically may consider reentry through the Academic Forgiveness Policy. This is only available to adult students who have been away from Caldwell for at least six years. For further information, please consult the College’s Undergraduate Catalog and your Academic Advisor in the Center for Student Success.
An average course load for a traditional undergraduate student is five or six courses (15-18 credits) in a given semester; Adult Undergraduates take an average of four courses (12 credits). Exceptional student who have a GPA above a 3.0 may request to take more than 18 credits by receiving permission from the Chair of their Major Department and the Executive Director of Student Success. Students will be charged additional tuition fees per additional credit taken above 18 credits. They should refer to the Office of Student Accounts & Bursar for the annual tuition and fees.
Traditional Undergraduates who enroll in less than 12 credits in a semester must submit a form signed by their Academic Advisor (Your Academic Advisor link), the Office of Financial Aid, and the Center for Student Success to be officially listed as part-time students. Be advised that Non-resident alien students and Student-Athletes must maintain 12 credits each semester and students who enroll in less than 12 credits cannot reside in residence housing.
Adult Undergraduates do not need to submit this form and automatically pay per credit.

Full-time students whose semester GPA is a 3.5 or higher will be notified by the Vice President of Academic Affairs that they have been placed on Dean’s LIst . There can be no grades of “F” or “Incomplete”.
Part-time students are also eligible to make Dean’s List. They must be matriculated, have accumulated 12 credit hours during an academic year (fall, winter,spring, summer) and have a 3.5 average or higher. Eligibility will be considered only once a year at the end of the summer session. There can be no grades of “F” or “Incomplete.
While all Caldwell students are only required to complete one major (Education majors require two majors), adding a second major is a great way to explore another area of study outside of your major, or one that complements your primary major. Students who have satisfied the requirements for more than one major may have both majors recorded on the degree and transcript. These students must officially declare their major to the Registrar’s office by submitting a signed major declaration form prior to graduation.
One major must have at least eight courses (minimum of 24 credits) that are not shared with the requirements for the second major or core. Students whose first major is Business Administration may not double major in another business major (ie. Accounting, Financial Economics, Global Business, Management, Marketing).

A student who is experiencing severe family or personal difficulties and who has completed 80% of the coursework may request a temporary Incomplete grade by talking with the instructor and receive permission from the Center for Student Success. Once agreed upon, the student should pick up the Incomplete form from the Registrar’s Office, obtain the necessary signatures, and return the form to the Registrar by the established deadline on the academic calendar (one week before the start of final exams period).
An Incomplete allows the student an extension to be determined by the instructor and stated on the form. Once work is submitted by the agreed upon due date, a final grade will be submitted by the instructor to replace the temporary IN notation, otherwise the temporary IN notation will turn into a failing grade and be calculated into the student’s GPA.

An Independent Study is a great opportunity for students to design an in-depth course of study, outside of the College’s regular course offerings, and in conjunction with a faculty member. This is a great opportunity to connect with a faculty member and pursue a research question or project that interests you.
Eligible students must have junior or senior standing, and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Interested students should pick up the Independent Study form from the Registrar’s Office and meet with their Academic Advisor and the Chair of their Major Department and the Executive Director of Student Success.

Internships are a great way to gain experience related to your major and interests and explore possible careers and learn about career paths. Students who have completed 45 credits (second semester sophomore status) and have at least a 3.0 GPA or have completed 60 credits (junior status) and have at least a 2.5 GPA are eligible to pursue a two or three credit internship. Eligible and interested students should contact the Office of Career Planning & Development to begin the process today!
Adding a minor is a great way to take a cohort of classes and get an overview in an area of study outside of your major, or one that complements your major. In addition to one major, students may wish to pursue a minor. A minor is constituted by a group of courses as determined by each department and made up of at least 18 credits. Students must officially declare their minor to the Registrar’s office by submitting a signed minor declaration form prior to graduation.
At least nine credits used towards a minor must be taken at Caldwell. No more than two courses used to complete the students’ major may be included in the minor.

Through the pass/fail options, students may take advantage of Caldwell’s liberal arts curriculum by taking a course outside of their major/minor where they are unfamiliar with the course content. Students have a maximum of two courses that can be taken pass/fail and they may not both be used in the same semester.
Eligible students must have junior or senior standing and may not elect a course pass/fail that they need towards their major or core requirements. Students must declare their intentions to take a course pass/fail by submitting the pass/fail paperwork to the Registrar’s office before the end of the add/drop period of the semester they register for the class.
Caldwell recognizes that sometimes students do not perform to the best of their ability in a course due to a number of circumstances and might want to retake a course to boost their GPA or because they need a minimum of a C to have it count towards their major. We therefore allow a student to repeat a course once without appeal and consent from the Chair of their Major Department if the course is in the student’s major or from the Center for Student Success if the course is not within the student’s major.
When a course is repeated, the higher grade is used to determine the GPA. Both grades, however, appear and remain recorded on the student’s transcript.
Caldwell offers a host of on-campus, external and online summer classes as two five-week sessions, and one eleven-week session, during late May, June, and July. Caldwell also offers a winter session in January.
The following students are eligible:
- On-Campus Summer/Winter: All Traditional Undergraduate, Adult Undergraduate, and Online students in good academic standing.
- Distance Learning/External Summer/Winter : All Adult Undergraduate and Online students, and only Traditional Undergraduates with at least 30 credits and a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or 60 credits and a cumulative GPA of 2.75.
- Online Summer/Winter: All Adult Undergraduate and Online students only.
Students may register for a maximum of twelve credits during the summer session with the approval of their Faculty Advisor. Eligible Traditional Undergraduates may take one Distance Learning/External Summer course, or a maximum of two Distance Learning/External Summer courses with the permission of the Executive Director of Student Success. Summer registration occurs at the same time students register for their fall classes, while Winter registration occurs at the same time students register for their spring classes. Grades and credits are included in the student’s overall Caldwell transcript.
In certain exceptional situations, students may request to take a summer/winter course off-campus. To begin the process, students must pick up the Approval To Take a Course At Another Institution form from the Registrar’s Office and meet with, the Chair of their Major Department, their Faculty Advisor, and the Executive Director of Student Success to receive pre-approval for the classes. The student must have an official transcript sent to our Registrar’s Office after completion of the course. Only grades of a C or higher will be accepted.

In an increasingly globalized society, Caldwell offers students two different opportunities to become globalized citizens, while making progress towards their Caldwell degree. We offer well-qualified students the opportunity to enhance their academic study by participating in a study abroad and/or short-term study abroad program.
- Study Abroad: The student studies for at least one semester in another country by applying directly to the host institution or through a program provider.
- Short-Term Study Abroad: The student participates in a one to three-week program led by a Caldwell faculty member.
All eligible students are required to:
- Have a minimum 2.5 GPA
- Be in good academic and social/judicial standing
- Declare at least one major
- Submit the Study Abroad Application to the Center of Student Success by the published deadline
