A Message from the Board of Trustees
February 28, 2023
Dr. Matthew Whelan has informed the Board of Trustees that he will be retiring from his position as President of Caldwell University at the end of his initial contract term, June 30, 2023.
Dr. Whelan has made the decision to begin transitioning into retirement and is looking forward to a new pace of life to be enjoyed with his family and friends. The University is committed to ensuring a smooth transition and has created a Transition Team, comprised of Ketan Gandhi, Vice President for Finance; Sheila O’Rourke, Vice President for Administration and Operations; and Beth Gorab, Executive Director, Annual Fund & Board Relations, to work closely with Dr. Whelan through the remainder of his tenure. The Transition Team will serve as an added resource for the University’s constituents.
During Dr. Whelan’s tenure, Caldwell University has achieved significant accomplishments and milestones, including admission of the second largest freshman class in our history for the 2023 academic year. Under his leadership, the University was able to successfully navigate the myriad challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, implementing measures to keep the campus community safe while continuing to provide exceptional education to students.
Board of Trustees Chair Brian Aloia expresses the appreciation of the trustees to Dr. Whelan for his outstanding service, dedication, and accomplishments, including the introduction of five new academic majors, two new athletic teams, and the launch of a new SOAR program for students with learning differences and wishes Dr. Whelan continuing success as he takes steps into a new stage of life.
Caldwell University continues to remain on solid footing and has a bright future ahead, building on the legacy of the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell and on our tradition of preparing strong leaders. Record enrollments and cutting-edge new programs are just a few of the many ways the University continues to attract students, faculty, staff, engagement and support.
A national search for a new President has begun.
