“Jungian Archetypal Mask Exhibition: Fall 2018” on display at Caldwell University

Jungian Mask on demonstration on Caldwell University through December 10.

Caldwell, N.J., Nov. 13, 2018 – The Caldwell University Art Therapy Programs Gallery is presenting “The Jungian Archetypal Mask Exhibition: Fall 2018.” The installation features the work of graduate art therapy students from the History and Development of Art Therapy course. The public is invited to view this free exhibition.

For more than a decade, students in the art therapy program have been creating Jungian masks based on the archetype of their choice. Although the base of each mask begins with burlap and carpenter glue, the viewer will discover that each artist has researched and defined an interpretation of his or her chosen archetype to reveal a highly personal depiction of a universal image.

Bonnie Berkowitz, MA, ATR-BC, ATCS, Caldwell art therapy faculty member and curator,  explained that psychologist “Carl Jung suggested ‘archetypes’ represent how our experiences and parts of our lives are organized, and may be understood through the psychic activity of an individual, be it in the form of dreams, artworks, ancient monuments or contemporary images.” The number of existing archetypes is not fixed; instead, some may overlap or combine at any given time.

Due to this notion, the students were encouraged to explore and experiment with a wide range of materials and applications so they could develop and construct their own stories.

The show is located on the third floor of Werner Hall on Caldwell’s campus and will be on display through Dec. 10, 2018.
