THE 78th ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT

The 78th Annual Commencement at Caldwell University will occur on Sunday, May 17, 2020, in the George R. Newman Center.  We will celebrate our graduating students with two ceremonies on this day. In the morning, we will confer degrees for the Masters and Doctoral candidates; in the early afternoon the second ceremony will confer degrees on candidates for Bachelor’s degrees. Each ceremony has distinctive tickets for guest admissionsas well as reporting times for degree recipients.

Graduate Commencement Ceremony

Sunday, May 17, 2020, 10:00 a.m.
George R. Newman Center

The Graduate Commencement Ceremony and Conferring of Degrees will begin at 10:00 a.m.  Guests should be seated in advance of the procession.

Ticket-bearing guests are invited to attend the Graduate Commencement Ceremony in the Newman Center. Each graduate participating in the graduate ceremony will receive six tickets for guests (the graduate does not need a ticket). Graduates must pick up tickets at Salute to Grads on April 212020. These tickets cannot be replaced if lost or stolen. Tickets must be presented for admission on Commencement Day. Keepsake announcements are not acceptable for admission.

Guest seating in the Newman Center is designated as the floor seats that are not reserved for the graduates, faculty, and other identified special guests. All guests, including children, must have a ticket to enter. Doors open at approximately 9:15 a.m.; guests should be seated by 9:45 a.m. for the Academic Procession, and plan to remain for the entire ceremony. Caldwell University recognizes the accomplishments of all of our graduates and will announce the name of each ceremony participant, therefore, it is expected that guests will remain for the entire ceremony as a courtesy to our graduates and their guests. Please know that strollers and balloons are not permitted inside the Newman Center gymnasium.

For guests of graduates without tickets, there are additional locations for simulcast viewing of the Graduate Commencement Ceremony on May 172020 in the Student Center Dining Hall and Cougar Den areas. Tickets are not needed for entry to these spaces which operate on a first-come first-served basis, with limited seating.

Please be aware the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony is held in the afternoon on May 17, 2020; Campus officials will begin clearing the plaza at 12 noon for the next ceremony.

 

Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony

Sunday, May 17, 2020, 1:00 p.m.

The Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony and Conferring of Degrees will begin at 1:00 p.m.  Guests should be seated in advance of the procession.

Each graduate participating in the undergraduate ceremony will receive four tickets for guests (the graduate does not need a ticket). Commencement Liturgy

Saturday, May 16, 2020, 4:00 p.m.
Student Center Gym

In the spirit of our Catholic and Dominican Tradition at Caldwell University, we will celebrate Liturgy on the Saturday of Commencement weekend. We are pleased to announce that the Liturgy will be celebrated by His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Tobin, C.Ss.R.

The celebration of the Liturgy begins at 4:00 p.m., and is open to all graduating students, their families and friendsfaculty and staff of Caldwell University. Attendance at this service will fulfill Sunday Liturgy requirements. Tickets are not required for the service and guests of all faith traditions are welcome. At the conclusion of the Liturgy, all attendees are invited to a reception with light refreshments in the Cougar Den.

Ticket Packet Information

Commencement Keepsake Announcements and Tickets

Caldwell University provides one complimentary stationery packet to graduates who are participating in the Commencement Ceremony. This packet includes keepsake announcements and corresponding envelopes along with the admission tickets for the appropriate ceremony. Graduating students must pick up these packets at the Salute to Grads event on April 21, 2020, between 12 noon – 7:00 p.m. Please note that additional Commencement Ceremony admission tickets cannot be purchased. Guests must present the admission ticket for entrance; keepsake announcements may not be used for entrance.

Instructions

Information in the packet includes instructions for the participating graduates as well as their guests. Alternate viewing site information and internet streaming reminders will be included. Other reminders about the weekend Commencement activities will also be found in this packet.

Guests with Special Needs

Guests who may have special needs should contact Barbara Moran at 973.618.3645 well in advance of the event. All guests entering the Newman Center must have a ticket, including caregivers, for fire code reasons.

Dates and Deadlines Information for Graduating Students

Students who are graduating can find even more detailed information on all the significant dates related to commencement on the Student Life page of the myCaldwell student portal  https://my.caldwell.edu/ICS/Student_Life/Commencement (login required). 

  • Commencement Address nominations are due by February 28, 2020. Students may nominate online. Students, be sure to check Caldwell email for the link.
  • Academic regalia must be ordered online by March 18, 2020.
  • Student loan borrowers must complete an Exit Counseling Session by April 17, 2020. Exit interview must be completed prior to receiving cap and gown and ticket packet. Students can contact Financial Aid with questions or go to www.studentloans.gov to complete the exit interview.
  • Graduating students must attend Salute to Grads on April 212020. Once cleared by campus offices, graduating students who will participate in their commencement ceremony will receive a ticket packet with detailed information for themselves and their guests. Graduating students should bring their ID.
  • Commencement Liturgy is May 16, 2020, at 4:00 p.m.
  • Master’s and Doctoral degree candidates check-in for the Commencement Procession beginning 9:00 a.m. on May 17, 2020 in the Student Center.
  • Bachelor degree candidates check-in for the Commencement Procession beginning at 12 noon on May 17, 2020 in the Student Center.

Academic Regalia

All candidates for graduation who plan to participate in the Commencement Ceremony are expected to wear official Caldwell University academic regalia. As the level of degree earned changes, there is symbolism that is reflected in the regalia. The bachelor’s gown reflects the Caldwell University seal and crest embroidered on the tabs in the front of the gown. The master’s gown has the University seal embroidered on the front tabs and as well as elongated sleeves attributed to the heritage of academic scholars who historically carried their books in their sleeves. The doctoral gown is red with bands of black velvet on the sleeves. The academic hood is different for each level of degree earned as well as discipline of the degree.  All Master’s and Doctoral candidates will be hooded on stage during the Graduate Commencement ceremony.

Regalia orders must be placed online in advance. In most cases, academic regalia will be picked up at Salute to Grads on April 21, 2020. Late orders may not be available for pick up at Salute to Grads. Please note that doctoral candidates may purchase the keepsake gown or a custom gown for Commencement. More information is available through the online order website or your academic discipline. No orders will be mailed to candidates. Candidates must go through the clearance process in order to pick up academic regalia and guest tickets.
