Chinese Institute Program

Caldwell University is offering a two-week institute to prepare Chinese high school students for study at American colleges and universities. Students will complete a rigorous schedule of activities, all focused on preparing students to successfully study at a college or university in the United States.

Sample Schedule for Chinese Institute

During the institute, students will take an American-style university course focusing on topics of relevance to higher education in the U.S. In the context of the class, students will strengthen their:

  • written and oral communication skills,
  • sharpen their critical thinking abilities,
  • and conduct academic research in response to class assignments.
Students will receive preparation to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) from professional tutors. After initial testing, students who need to enhance their oral, written and reading skills in English will receive tutoring in English as a Second Language (ESL).

Rosary Hall - Caldwell UniversityDuring the institute, students will live in residential housing on the Caldwell campus. Each evening, resident advisors will provide programming in the residence halls, introducing students to topics that American college students can expect to encounter.

During the institute, students will be placed in classes of no more than 25 students. They will receive personalized attention from faculty, staff and administrators at Caldwell throughout the institute in the evaluation of their work and in strengthening their individual abilities and skills.

An optional one-day program for parents will be offered, providing an overview of American higher education and an opportunity to explain expectations for parents, as well as discuss topics of importance to both international students and their families.

Caldwell University is a safe and beautiful campus located within close proximity to three international airports (JFK and LaGuardia in New York City and Liberty International in Newark, New Jersey).


The price for the two-week institute is $5500. This includes the cost of all of the activities described above and housing and meals for students for that period. Parents are invited to attend a one-day seminar to provide information about higher education in the United States and to assist them in helping their sons or daughters make the transition into an American college or university. The parent seminar will be held on the Friday of the second week of the student institute. Airfare to the New Jersey/New York area and car service from the airport to Caldwell University are not included in the price.

Applications for the summer 2017 institutes are due no later than March 1, 2017. A deposit of $2,750 should be sent at www.caldwell.edu/chinese-institute and received by March 1. The remainder of the fee must be received no later than May 1 to ensure a spot in the institute. Processing of applications after March 1, 2017, requires an additional deposit of $250.
