Caldwell University Business Division Adds Sport Management Concentration

Caldwell, N.J. – October 24, 2013 – Business Administration majors at Caldwell University will soon have the option of adding a concentration in sport management to their studies.

With the rapid growth of the business of sports, this concentration will help prepare students for work in sports marketing, operations and administration and other business aspects of the sports world, both professional and nonprofessional.

Bernard O’Rourke, J.D., associate dean of the business division, says the department is excited to be introducing the new sport management concentration to the Caldwell University business program. “With nine major league teams located within 25 miles of Caldwell University, we perceive our location as highly valuable for students aiming for a career in sport management,” he says. “Besides the many major and minor league teams, we also have an abundance of sport communications and marketing companies in the greater New York City region.”

O’Rourke says they have built the concentration around that infrastructure to prepare students for sports-oriented business careers, while still equipping them with all the essentials needed for a general career in business.“Our specialized courses will be in sport administration, sport marketing, facilities and operations management. To this students can elect to add a sport business internship or another course from a range of options.”

Currently the undergraduate business students have the option of concentrating in global business, human resource management or small business/entrepreneurship. The sport management concentration will be 12 credits and will begin in fall 2014. The division will also offer an 18 credit minor in sport management.

O’Rourke pointed out that the sports finance group W.R. Hambrecht + Co reported that the professional sports industry “has enjoyed impressive growth over the past several decades” and that “the sports industry has not only weathered the recent economic recession nicely, but has shown strong growth.”

The college’s business programs are accredited by ACBSP (Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs). ACBSP is a leading specialized accreditation association for business education supporting, celebrating, and rewarding teaching excellence.

After the program is introduced, the business division will pursue accreditation for the Sport Management concentration.
