SPRINT FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS SUCCESSFUL FALL SEASON
The Caldwell University sprint football team highlighted a successful fall season as it tied a program record with back-to-back five-win seasons. The Cougars finished the season with a 5-2 overall record and took second place in the Collegiate Sprint Football League North Division with a 3-1 division record. The Cougars earned a program-record 13 CSFL All-League honorees, led by CSFL Rookie of the Year and CSFL First Team selection freshman Devon Turner (Bergenfield, New Jersey). Joining Turner on the first team were senior offensive lineman Hunter Pein (Secaucus, New Jersey), freshman punt returner Donovan Swasey (Clifton, New Jersey), senior defensive lineman Michael Lohrmann (Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey) and sophomore defensive back Kyle Readus (Paterson, New Jersey).
The CSFL Second Team featured four defensive players: sophomore linebacker Andrew Conklin (Long Branch, New Jersey), graduate linebacker Anthony Guarino (Tinton Falls, New Jersey), sophomore defensive back Gennaro Longobardi (Nutley, New Jersey) and sophomore defensive back Amajuwan Murray (Rahway, New Jersey). Sophomore tight end Angelo Drake (Manville, New Jersey) and freshman offensive lineman Joseph Alberti (Nutley, New Jersey) were recognized in the CSFL Second Team offense. The final two honorees were senior quarterback Frank DeMaio (Nutley, New Jersey) and junior defensive lineman Messiah Porter (Rutherford, New Jersey), who were part of the CSFL Honorable Mention All-League Team
JOEY DATTA WINS CACC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP
Men’s cross country sophomore Joey Datta (Edison, New Jersey) captured first place at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship meet to earn CACC Runner of the Year honors. Datta won the conference title with an 8k time of 26:30.8, which set the conference course record. Datta finished 52 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, becoming the program’s first conference Runner of the Year recipient. The Cougars, as a team, finished in fifth overall, tying their best finish in program history.
Women’s cross country senior Ana Gonzalez Martin (Toledo, Spain) earned all-conference honors as she finished in 11th place at the CACC championship, taking CACC Third Team All-Conference honors with a 5k time of 20:54.4. As a team, the Cougars finished in ninth place at the conference championship.
The women’s soccer team completed its season with a 7-7-5 overall record, finishing in seventh place in the CACC with a 5-4-3 conference record. The Cougars reached the CACC semifinals for the eighth time in the last 16 years but fell short on penalty kicks. Senior defender Brianna Lewis (Tucson, Arizona) was named to the CACC All-Conference Second Team.
The men’s soccer team finished with a 5-10-3 overall record and secured the eighth spot in the CACC playoffs with a 4-5-3 conference record. Senior forward Andre Vieira (Union, New Jersey) was a CACC First Team All-Conference selection while earning Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-Region Second Team honors.
The volleyball team finished its season with nine wins this past fall with an 8-10 conference record. Graduate Libero Humiko Stormer (Luckey, Ohio) earned CACC All-Conference Third Team recognition and finished her career second in school history with 2,049 career digs.
