WELCOME TO THE CALDWELL COLLEGE ONLINE WRITING LAB

Writing Lab Tutor Kristy EngingerWriting can be frustrating at times. At any point in the writing process you may encounter a shortage of ideas, have difficulty pulling your ideas together, or you might just be unsure of whether you’ve expressed yourself clearly. Although the most effective writing assistance takes place face-to-face in the Academic Support Center (so if you can come in person, please do), an alternative is Caldwell College’s Online Writing Lab.

SERVICE AVAILABLE: Spring and Fall semesters to only Continuing Education/External Degree students. These students may call 973-618-3643 for availability during Summer Sessions I and II

RESPONSE TIME:  Papers sent on-line will be read M-F 2:30 – 4:30. Therefore, you should expect to receive a response within 72 hours of the time you send your paper, not including Sat/Sun. Responses will be sent to the e-mail address provided at the time of your submission.

LENGTH OF PAPERS:  Adequate response to a paper that exceeds 5 pages is impractical to expect from on-line tutoring.  Please visit the on-campus lab with longer research papers.

GOAL OF TUTORING:  Please note that the goal of tutoring writing is to help writers develop skills, not to write for them. Therefore,

YOU MAY RECEIVE HELP WITH:

  • pre-writing to generate ideas
  • determining a focus
  • improving organization
  • developing supporting points
  • finding links to sites at the Purdue University On-Line Writing Lab
  • learning rules of grammar, punctuation, and documentation

YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE HELP IN THE FORM OF:

  • re-writing your ideas
  • “proofreading”: inserting corrections for errors in punctuation and grammar

CONTENT VS. MECHANICS

Please be aware that revising both content and mechanics usually requires separate attention. Most papers will benefit from a second submission to focus on mechanics, after content and organization have improved.
