Assessing and Managing Suicidal Risk: Best Practices for Professionals

This workshop will bring together information on the most current practices and background on working with suicidal individuals. Participants will:

  • Learn about the statistics behind suicide today.
  • Understand the theories underlying the development suicidal ideation.
  • Be able to recognize the warning signs for suicide and become competent in asking and assessing for suicidal ideation
  • Learn about the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (CASE) approach to suicide assessment and understand how to implement a comprehensive suicide assessment.
  • Gain a knowledge in treatment planning and best practices for managing suicidal risk
  • Understand the principles of good clinical decision making with regard to assessing for suicide and appreciate the key components of effective documentation for suicide.

This workshop is appropriate for mental health practitioners, social workers, school counsel-ors, medical providers, and anyone else who provides services to individuals who may be at risk to themselves.

Presenter Biography

Dr. Thomson Ling is an Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology at Caldwell College. Prior to joining the faculty at Caldwell College, Dr. Ling served as a counselor at Virginia Tech University where he gained an expertise in working with suicide and crisis situations. Dr. Ling is a certified instructor in the Campus Connect Suicide Prevention Training program for gatekeepers and currently is a member of Caldwell College’s Crisis Intervention Team which assess and provides support students who may be in crisis. Dr. Ling received his PhD from the University of Maryland College Park.
