Caldwell College Gave Me Confidence in Competitive Job Market
Despite the recent downturn in the economy, Jonathan Cabral felt optimistic about his future after graduating from Caldwell College in December 2009. He says he owes this confidence to the one-on-one attention and hands-on-learning experiences he received at Caldwell College. “My time at the College made me feel like my self-worth is determined by what I learn, not by the economy,” said Jonathan, who graduated with a Communication Arts degree and a minor in Marketing.

Shortly after graduating, Jonathan landed a job at a Marketing & Public Relations firm. During the job search process, he was able to “showcase” the projects and accomplishments he had already achieved as a student. “Several unique experiences at Caldwell College encouraged me to utilize my creativity and gave me a tremendous opportunity to learn who I am,” Jonathan said.

One of his favorite projects was part of an upper level Public Relations class, in which the students developed a PR plan for the new Autism Center opening on the Caldwell College campus in Fall 2010. The class presented their ideas to the President of the College and Psychology faculty members, and they saw many of their concepts implemented. “I was already an enthusiastic, driven person,” Jonathan said. “But Caldwell College was a place where I could grow in that and have the opportunity to shine.” His interest in Public Relations and Broadcast News was also cultivated at the College, where he received an internship at Channel 9 and worked on campus in the College’s Media Relations & Advertising Department.

But it wasn’t all work and no play for Jonathan. While at Caldwell College, he found himself part of a graduating class that felt more like a “close-knit family” than a college community. He says there is a true “sense of coming together” on campus, with plenty of support services and opportunities to get involved. Jonathan enjoyed his role as staff writer and Nationals editor for the school newspaper, and he got together with other Communication Arts majors to produce a video yearbook his senior year. As much as Jonathan enjoyed these activities for the pure fun they allowed, he still recognizes them as an integral part of his learning experience and as just a few more examples of how Caldwell College has prepared him for a bright future.
