When deciding on which college to attend, Dan Hohman was looking for a setting that would offer him strong academic support, unique social experiences, and leadership opportunities. He found all of that and more at Caldwell College. “The small class sizes allow for one-on-one availability from the teachers, who are able to stay on top of your attendance, academic progress, and personal goals,” he said. “The Academic Support Center and its free tutoring resources were a major factor in my decision to enroll here. I know I will always get the support I need.”
As a brain cancer survivor, Dan learned at an early age what it feels like to be different. At Caldwell College, he has found a diverse student body where everyone fits in. “The variety of student backgrounds here has made me feel accepted and given me the confidence that I can do what everyone else can. There are students from all different backgrounds, cultures, and countries, yet there is a strong sense of acceptance among all of us.”
Dan has not only found a place at Caldwell College; he has taken on roles and projects that position him as a leader among the student body. As a Resident Advisor and Vice President of the Residence Council, Dan is a “voice” for his fellow students and their suggestions and ideas. And in 2008, he attended the annual Dominican Preaching in Action Conference, where he learned more about Youth and Young Adult Ministry.
As a member of the Executive Board for “Up ‘til Dawn,” Dan is part of a student-led team that conducts fundraisers and promotes awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His childhood fight against cancer has fueled his passion to help others in need and to hopefully pursue a career as a social Worker and help children in a hospital setting. “I want to be an example of how good can come out of bad. My personal experience has given me a special understanding of what these kids are going through. I want to help them, just like so many people helped me and my family.”
In order to achieve his career goals, Dan is working towards a 5-year combined B.A./M.S.W. degree in Sociology, which Caldwell College offers in conjunction with Rutgers University. He says the availability of grants and loans at the College has, in large part, enabled him to pursue his dreams. He is the recipient of the College’s Recognition Award and Trustee Scholarship. “To the Financial Aid department and everyone else at Caldwell College, you are more than a number. You are an individual with unique needs to be met, and special talents to offer in return.”
My favorite thing to do at Caldwell…
“My favorite thing to do at Caldwell is spending time with the other students. I love when I am able to just hang out with the other college students. Whether we are all playing cards, watching a movie, or even just eating a meal, I enjoy being able to do that. Without these social events, or moments, college wouldn't be the same.”
The most rewarding event I was involved in on campus…
“The most rewarding event I was involved in is our Saint Jude Up 'Till Dawn Finale event and seeing all our fundraising efforts and preparation put together into an amazing evening. The best part of the finale event was knowing that the money we raised will be helping the children of Saint Jude. I learned that hard work will always end with a reward one way or another.”
