Service Projects in the Dominican/Catholic Tradition of Campus Ministry at Caldwell College
Each
year students at Caldwell College are invited to go beyond themselves
and meet the needs of the world community and local communities through
special outreach projects. Many projects are coordinated by the Office
of Campus Ministry. Such projects include:
Food for Hungry and Needy
Students can participcate by collecting both food and money for the NJ FoodBank. They may also volunteer to work at the Foodbank in preparing food for distribution and in many other service opportunities provided by the NJ Food bank network.
St.
John’s Soup Kitchen – Newark
In addition to volunteer opportunities at the NJ Foodbank, student may also volunteer to assist in providing meals at St John’s Soup Kitchen in downtown Newark. Students are asked to provide 4 hours of their time to prepare the meal and serve either breakfast or lunch. Each day, St John’s serves meals to the hundreds of homeless and hungry men and women of downtown Newark and volunteers are always needed.
Crop
Walk
Annually students join in the Church World Service’s organized walk to raise funds to stop hunger both locally and globally. Student seek financial sponsors for their walk and share in the planning of this event. The walk provides students with an opportunity to out their words into action by walking the walk in the fight against hunger.
The Midnight Run
Students volunteer to go out into the streets of Manhattan and feed and clothe the homeless. Midnight Run is a volunteer organization dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless. Volunteers distribute food, clothing, blankets and personal care items to the homeless poor on the streets of New York City.
Its goal is to forge a bond between housed and homeless people by establishing a foundation of sharing and caring from which solutions may evolve. Through Midnight Run, volunteers come to see the homeless as real people, not a commodity. And homeless men and women learn that many people have commitments and concerns that go beyond their own lives and families.
Broadway House Volunteers and World AIDS Day Celebrations
Celebrated on December 1, World AIDS Day highlight the ways people in local communities are getting together to take responsibility for stopping the spread of the disease, helping people who are living with HIV/AIDS, and remembering those who have died from AIDS.
Students who have interest in working with men and women who are living with HIV/AIDS may volunteer their time and talents at Broadway House, a care facility in downtown Newark or at other AIDS Service organizations in the tris-State area.

Students can volunteer on a weekly basis or may choose to do an internship through the college Student Development Center in which they receive college credit while learning about themselves, their fields of study and their career goals.
Through the Giving Treet program students and staff can volunteer to coordinate and participate in programs that helps both young children and their mothers at several area shelters by supplying basic needs such as clothes, toiletries, and nonperishable baby food.
Outreach to Seniors
Recognizing the aging of America and the need for continued friendship and care for the elderly, our students volunteer to participate in a numerous outreach program to diverse senior populations. Students can assist with recreation programming at a local senior residence community or assist at St. Catherine’s Adult Day Care facility located on college campus.
Afterschool Hours Tutoring and Care programs
Students can volunteer to work at local after school hour programs tutoring students and providing recreations activities. These programs engage the students in programs in a safe environment that may enhance the learning opportunities of needy children in the communities surrounding the college campus. Students who volunteer in these programs are able to apply classroom knowledge to the experience of learning alongside a child or youth in need.
