Caldwell College Education Programs
Earn 5 Year National Accreditation
The Education Division at Caldwell College is pleased to announce that its Teacher Preparation and Educational Administration and Supervision programs have earned 5 year national accreditation. After several years of planning and preparation of necessary documents, the programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels were approved on September 26, 2008. According to the letter received by the College from the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) in Washington, D.C.:
Caldwell College’s Educational Administration and Supervisory program which is designed to prepare students to attain NJ certification as a principal or supervisor, demonstrate understanding of administrative theory and strategic decision-making, and act in an ethical, fair and trustworthy manner with all members of the school community is pre-accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) for a period of five years from September, 2008 to September, 2013.
In reference to the Teacher Preparation programs, including all programs that result in NJ certification, TEAC made the following recommendation for accreditation:
Caldwell College’s Teacher Preparation program, which is designed to prepare teachers, nurses, and curriculum specialists who demonstrate mastery of the subjects they will be expected to teach, are knowledgeable in the application of instructional and technological strategies that are learner-centered and appropriate to the diverse needs of the students, and reflect upon classroom practices as they related to competent instruction and the caring nature of their teaching, is pre-accredited by the Teacher Education Council (TEAC) for a period of five years, from September 2008 to September 2013.
The College was visited by a team of auditors from TEAC last January. The auditors spent two and one-half days poring over the report, or “preaccreditation brief”, prepared by the Education division faculty. The auditors’ report was submitted to TEAC and a panel of educators assembled from various higher education institutions around the country was convened in Washington, D.C. Panel members reviewed the Teacher Preparation and Educational Administration & Supervision briefs and prepared questions for the College representatives who met with them on August 21 at the TEAC offices in Washington, D.C. Upon satisfactory response by the Caldwell College personnel, a unanimous decision was issued by the panel and recently confirmed in the aforementioned letters by the Accreditation Committee of the TEAC Board of Directors.
This is the culmination of several years' of coordination of data to verify that the College’s programs in Teacher Preparation and Educational Administration accomplish what they claim to realize on behalf of undergraduate and graduate students preparing to achieve certification to serve as teachers in regular or special education, school nurses, school principals and supervisors of instruction in New Jersey’s schools. The professional knowledge, decision-making skills, and sense of ethical and moral foundation were evidenced in the research conducted by the program staff. “Many hours of preparation and expertise were expended by our full time and adjunct faculty to attain this national preaccreditation", remarked Dr. Janice Stewart, Interim Dean of the Education division. "We look forward to maintaining and extending the level of recognition that our program has accomplished”, continued Dr. Stewart. Dr. John McIntyre, author of the “Brief” and Coordinator of the Educational Administration and Supervision (EAS) program extended his gratitude for the support of the College’s administrative leadership and the cooperation of the faculty. “Most of our EAS faculty are active school superintendents and administrators in New Jersey school districts”, noted McIntyre. "It is a real sacrifice for these experienced and busy professionals to find time to teach as well as assist with the accreditation process, but they did so willingly and skillfully. We couldn’t have reached this goal without all of these colleagues."
The College can now go forward in providing a continued level of excellence to its students who may be secure in the knowledge that the National accreditation that will be required of all institutions providing similar programs by the New Jersey Department of Education has been achieved by Caldwell College.
