SUPERFRAGILISTIC A performance by Hélène Picard December 6th from 6-7 pm
When you arrive in New York City, whatever your story, whatever your aim, you feel that the American dream is still active. You feel the hope and fear of the millions of people who landed before you over centuries. You feel as they did, that this place would change something in your life. You feel like an immigrant. You are an immigrant.
Before coming to New York, I packed my furniture, I left my home and when I looked at my suitcase I thought about Mary Poppins, the famous nomad nanny and her magic bag. And, I wondered how do you fit your entire house, your personal belongings, your culture, your story in a simple bag.
Super fragilistic is an ongoing project about immigration and my experience as a migrant.
Hélène Picard is a French artist, currently a resident artist at the ISCP, in New York City. She works as a painter and creates pictorial spaces mixing painting, fabrics and costumes. The union of sewing with painting, both materials very similar, changes the space into a huge color field where the visitor feels as if he’s inside the painting. In order to create a living dimension to her artwork Hélène Picard has recently begun working with performance. Using her personal daily experience and the theatrical qualities of costume, she features performances combining work process, installation and storytelling.
