Communication Arts Department Launches Satellite Radio Program

The Communication Arts Department at Caldwell College has launched a radio program entitled Lets Consider the Source that can be heard on XM Satellite Radio in the United States and Canada. Host of the program, Professor Bob Mann said the program examines current media issues. “A free nation depends on a reliable media. Very often, there is controversy concerning the impact of mass media on our culture. Is the news reporting objective? What is the impact of violence in entertainment media? Is free speech threatened? This show attempts to give thoughtful attention to these questions, “ Mann said.

Some of the guests have already included: Kaye Zusman Vice President of Programming Strategy at the Weather Channel on the controversy created by the network’s stance that global warming is a reality and not a topic for debate; Star Ledger’s Alan Sepinwall on the impact of the Sopranos on television and American culture and Joel Simon, Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, on the threats reporters face around the globe.

The show is a production of the Communication Arts department at Caldwell College in association with Mann Media Inc. and Media Educators Association. It is produced by Professor Mann, Communication Arts Department Chair Professor John Yurko and Studio Manager Nick Amabile. In addition, students Deanna Wolowitz and Laura Sumas are assisting in production as part of their independent studies. The programs are often taped or edited during the Communication Arts Department Senior Media Seminar and Radio Broadcasting classes. “It’s a great learning experience for the students,” Mann said.
