COLLEGE COMMUNITY REMEMBERS STUDENT RAHUL HAMAL AND RAISES FUNDS FOR HIS FAMILY
March 30, 2009 - Caldwell College students, faculty and staff gathered March 30 to pray for and remember student Rahul Hamal who passed away on Friday March 27. At a prayer service organized by members of the college staff and his friends, the college community placed flowers in front of the picture of the young man who was an Accounting major and international student from Nepal.
His friend Bishrut Thapa, a student at Caldwell, invited the community to come forward and write a message in a memory book. He also invited students and the college community to support a fundraiser to help Rahul’s family pay for expenses. If you would like to donate, please go to www.helprahul.org.
His friend Ashesh Khadka said “Hamal was more than just a roommate to me. He was like my elder brother.” He added, “He was a great student, sportsman, and a great companion. His ever present smile and his fond memories will stay with me forever.” His friends Abhishek Karki and Deepak Gautam remembered Rahul as their friend who had a wonderful sense of humor. “He was a great student, great tutor and a great friend,” Gautam said. “His memories will be endless to us.”
“The College community is deeply saddened about the loss of such a bright young man who was such a wonderful part of our college community. Our prayers and support go out to his parents, sister, family, and friends at this time,” said Sister Patrice Werner, O.P, Ph.D. Caldwell College President.
Staff member Colleen DeTroia, who worked in the Admissions office with Rahul, said he was a very special young man with a “huge personality and infectious smile.” DeTroia said Rahul was a very important part of their department. “Rahul was a piece of our very extraordinary puzzle and we will not be complete without him.”
Rahul’s parents and cousin had been in the U.S. for several weeks after arriving to be by Rahul’s side.
