The College celebrated the George R. Newman Center building dedication with a formal blessing from His Eminence Cardinal Theodore Mc Carrick during a ceremony in the Newman Center gymnasium Sept. 16th.
The guest of honor was business entrepreneur and philanthropist George W. Newman who presented the College with a $1 million cash gift in 2001 to complete the George R. Newman Center. The center is dedicated in the name of Newman’s son George R. Newman, who passed away at a young age. President Sister Patrice Werner, O.P., Ph.D., is particularly pleased that the Cardinal Mc Carrick could join the college community for this special occasion.
The new building will help accommodate the recreational and social needs of a growing student population. The 60,000 square foot Student Activities and Recreation Center houses a large gym with two practice basketball courts, which can be used simultaneously and a game court with retractable seating for 1,400 spectators. A running/walking track circles the perimeter of the gym above the basketball courts. The new center also has meeting and activity rooms, a game room, student activities offices, an updated fitness center, an aerobics studio, locker rooms and athletic offices. The college's bookstore has also been expanded and relocated to the building. PHOTOS FROM THE DEDICATION
