Caldwell College Division of Education to host its first literacy conference
The Caldwell College Division of Education will hold a literacy conference, “Open Books Open Minds” on Friday March 9, 2012. The conference will include presentations by an array of successful authors and will focus on how to engage young readers and help them improve their writing skills through books. The conference runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is open to teachers, parents, administrators, media specialists, and reading specialists.
The keynote speaker will be David Lubar who will present on “From Shelving Books and Annoying my Teachers to Writing Books and Hooking Readers.’’ Lubar is the author of children and young adult books such as “Attack of The Vampire Weenies;’’ “Enter the Zombie,’’ “Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie’’ and “Punished,” about a boy who is cursed to speak in puns. Lubar is also a former video game designer who worked on Atari Gameboy games like Frogger and Superbreakout in the 1980s and 1990s. The well-known storyteller, Sharon Dennis Wyeth, will also speak at the conference.
Workshop speakers include: author Arturo Martinez on “Celebramos Libros: The Latino Story in Literature;’’ poet Mel Glenn and Dr. M. Jerry and Helen Weiss on “Time to Laugh: Humor in Literature”; Glen on “Poetry: The Creative Process” and “Poetry as Storytelling”; Francine DelVecchio, Ed.D., Caldwell College assistant professor of education, on “Enhancing Elementary Content Through Literature”; Angelia Carfalhal of Barnes and Noble on “The New Migration: e-books in Our Schools”; Walter Cmieleweski, Ed.D., Caldwell College professor of education, on “The Reading and Writing Connection” and more.
Breakfast and lunch will be served at the conference. The day will close with the distribution of certificates and a book signing by the various invited authors. Caldwell College offers a master of arts in literacy instruction and also a Reading Specialist certification.
The Division of Education offers reading and writing services to K-12 students at its Literacy Instruction Center.
