IMAGINATION: A Child's Journey into Learning

  1. Movement to Motivate the Mind – Dorothy Mutch This workshop focuses on using movement and music to energize the imagination of young students and to boost their capacity in order to absorb and remember new content. This workshop is designed for primary grade teachers.
  2. Reading Aloud to Support Instruction – Denise Brokenborough Reading the best quality children’s literature stimulates the imagination. Discover how these great read alouds can support your academic learning objectives.
  3. Children with Autism: Increasing Social Interactions and Play – Tracy Reilly Lawson Children with developmental disabilities, such as autism, often have difficulties with social interactions and play. This workshop will discuss tactics to teach social and conversational skills to children with disabilities.
  4. Reinforcing Positive Social Skills: Character Education Through Children’s Literature – Joanne Jasmine and Lisa Barone In this workshop, participants will learn how to implement a character education program through the use of children’s literature. Children’s books will be read and discussed along with corresponding activities that teach positive social behaviors.
  5. Imagine a World of Numbers - Joan Moriarty Students will have hands on activities that involve the world of numbers and math concepts that are reinforced in the Children’s Literature.
  6. Gestures and Folktales: Using finger plays to develop language of English Language Learners (and other children). Ellina Chernobilsky The proposed workshop will focus on using finger plays to teach language and social skills to young children. Although the workshop’s focus is the instruction of English Language Learners, all teachers of young children may benefit from the techniques that will be presented and discussed.
  7. Beyond the Fir Tree – Estelle Meyer Would you choose to go down the lane with the “good little bunnies”? Whatever path you take, you’ll learn valuable lessons across the curriculum and appreciate Beatrix Potter’s tale as literature that inspires a creative classroom.
  8. The Essence of Education – Cathy Lundquist Imagine if you were a Native American searching for a dream, imagine, if you were Martin Luther King searching for a peaceful nation, imagine if you were a kite, where would you fly and imagine if you were a butterfly what would you do? The essence of education is not to stuff a child’s head with facts but to help him discover his imagination and how unique that makes him.
  9. Imagination and Curriculum: Perfect Together – Gloria Castucci Learn how to design lessons that support a child’s natural sense of wonder and curiosity. This workshop will provide ideas for teachers on how to develop activities that support imagination and creativity.
  10. The Wonderful World of Writing – Francine DelVecchio In this workshop, participants will learn of ways to spark young children’s interest in writing through literature, whole group experiences, and play. An overview of the writing process approach and strategies for supporting young writer’s development will also be presented.
