Composer Joseph Turrin Shares His Work with Student Musicians for Christmas Spectacular

This year’s Christmas Spectacular had a special twist to it with the students performing a work by New Jersey based composer Joseph Turrin. The students performed Scarecrow Overture by Turrin as the opening number at the concert on Dec. 6.

Earlier in the month, Turrin visited the college and rehearsed with the college wind ensemble and the high school honor band students. He explained the piece in detail to the students and answered questions about his compositional style.

Turrin is known for his enormous contributions to contemporary American musical life through his work as a composer, orchestrator, conductor, pianist, and teacher.

The concert featured the musicians and choir performing international Christmas selections and it culminated with the joyous annual carol sing along.

The concert was directed by music department faculty Laura Greenwald and Rebecca Vega.
