Caldwell College Art Student Creates Mural for "Taste of Caldwells" Event
Caldwell College Art Student and President of the College Art Club Anthony Castellano designed and sketched an expansive, beautiful street scene mural for the 2nd Annual Taste of Caldwells event, which was held on campus Sunday March 29. Taste of Caldwells was a fundraiser to benefit Caldwell-West Caldwell Education Foundation (CWCEF).
Castellano, a junior and Education Art major, guided a group of painters in creating the finished product. Located in the cafeteria, the impressive backdrop was made up of 15 4 feet by 8 feet panels and featured Caldwell buildings and restaurants.
Castellano said he used flat line, color and shape in a geometric 2D manner to recreate a downtown street scene. "It was a matter of being both bold and flexible with the layout. Everything happened one panel at a time. Next, came the painting. Here's where the CWCEF committee assisted in the application of acrylic paint by a traditional paint by number system." He said he wanted to use bright uplifting colors. "The colors reflected the way we felt during the process. We were positive, and we had fun." He added that it was great to network with talented people. "Not only did we make a mural, we made new friends in the process."
There were also some bigger life lessons learned about teamwork during the process. "Even though this was my first time working on something this size, I realized that there's nothing too big that cannot be finished or overcome."
Several Caldwell College student-athletes volunteered at the event and spent a large part of Saturday and Sunday setting up and breaking down. Assistant Director of Athletics Linda Cimino, who coordinates Caldwell College's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, worked with Ann Dassing of the CWCEF to provide the student-athlete volunteers.
Hundreds of people came out to the event to taste the delectable delights from Calandra's Italian Village, Caldwell Seafood, Cloverleaf Tavern, Divina Restaurant, Edible Arrangements of Caldwell, Forte Pizzeria & Ristorante, Luce, Ocha Japanese Cuisine, Chiptole Mexican Grill, Russillo's Ristorante & Pizzeria, Sunrise Kitchens Shop Rite, Sushi Café, R&R Marketing LLC, Crave Restaurant & Lounge, Fairchild's Market, Marra's Restaurant, Avenue Bistro Pub, Jack's Café, Sonny's On The Avenue, and Gourmet Café Italian Bistro.
The College was a Platinum Sponsor of the event, which benefitted the Caldwell-West Caldwell Education Foundation (CWCEF). Other sponsors were: R&R Marketing, The Kiwanis Club of Caldwell/West Essex, The Roberts Foundation, PSE&G, Lakeland Bank, Calandra's Italian Village, The Manor of West Orange and Vila Meats.
