Office of Residence Life Hosts First United Nations Forum

By Colleen DeTroia

The office of Residence Life hosted its first United Nations forum on October 22. Granville Butler, local resident assistant and Youth Representative to the United Nations for The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, invited fellow delegates to address residents in an open forum on world concerns. UN delegates addressed the issues of youth here in the United States and around the world. German delegate Jonathan Mack questioned Americans on how it was possible for them live in the most free nation in the world and at the same time live in a country where young people do not take the opportunity to question or challenge their government on issues affecting them. Business Professor Virginia Rich also challenged young people to exercise their voice by heading to the polls. The group discussed how the problem is getting worse around the world because young people are not exercising their right to vote in other countries. They said it is time to encourage young people and citizens in general to speak to the government and the best way to do that is by going to the polls.

A special thanks goes out to the Office of Admissions, the Division of Business and the Department of History for their contribution in making this landmark event a success.
