Vale Reciprocal Borrowing Program

As of January 2002, the college and university libraries in the VALE consortium agreed to extend reciprocal borrowing privileges to their respective full-time faculty, and staff and in July, 2004, the VALE libraries agreed to extend reciprocal borrowing privileges to each other’s graduate students.

Starting September, 2008, the VALE Libraries agreed to expand their participation and extend reciprocal borrowing privileges to each other’s undergraduate students.

Consult the lists of VALE Reciprocal Borrowing Participating Libraries for Faculty and Staff or for Graduate Students or Undergraduate Students to determine if you qualify for onsite borrowing privileges at the library you are interested in visiting.

  • Ask circulation staff at Jennings Library for a VALE Reciprocal Borrowing Application Form and fill it out. If you are applying for privileges at more than one library, you must fill out an individual form for each library. Circulation staff at Jennings Library will verify your standing and sign the form.
  • Present the signed application form along with a photo ID at the participating library’s circulation desk. You will be issued borrowing privileges and/or a guest borrower card. Privileges are for one academic year and expire June 30th.
  • To renew your borrowing privileges, you must present a new application form signed by a circulation staff member of the Jennings Library.
  • You will be responsible for complying with the lending library’s circulation policies, including loan periods, overdue fines, recalls, all replacement and processing fees, and for returning all borrowed items directly to the lending library.

To be eligible, one must be a full-time faculty member, staff member, graduate or undergraduate student of a participating VALE institution.

The borrower must present a valid photo I.D. and the original completed VALE Reciprocal Borrowing Application Form which has been signed by his/her home library. Registration for VALE reciprocal borrowers is valid through June 30th of each year.

VALE Reciprocal Borrowers may have a total of three (3) items checked out to their account at any given time. Only circulating materials may be borrowed for a loan period of twenty eight days (28). No renewals are permitted. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Library Director in advance. Fines for overdue books are 10 cents per day, per book. Recalls are $1.00 per day after recall due date.

The Reciprocal Borrower is responsible for the replacement cost of lost or damaged items. Damaged materials are subject to a $10.00 non-refundable processing fee plus damage assessment, depending upon extent of damage. Lost materials are subject to a $10.00 non-refundable processing fee plus a $50.00 replacement fee.

VALE Reciprocal Borrowers cannot place holds, recalls or interlibrary loan requests. Borrowing privileges will be suspended if one or more checked out items is overdue; if there are unpaid fines or bills; or if there are any unresolved problem transactions.

All items must be returned directly to the Jennings Library at Caldwell University.
