Circulation Policies & Procedures

Effective March 1, 2013 

BORROWING PRIVILEGES

Borrowing privileges are extended to Caldwell College students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Failure to abide by Library and College policies may result in the loss of borrowing privileges.

ID Cards
Registration for borrowing privileges may be made at the Circulation Desk. A current Caldwell College ID card must be presented for all borrowing transactions. ID cards must be updated every semester a student is registered at the College.

Confidentiality
Under New Jersey state law, library patron circulation and registration records are confidential.

LOAN PERIODS

Undergraduate Students

  • Books may be checked out for 4 weeks but are always due at the end of the semester.
  • No more than 10 books may be checked out at any one time.
  • Items may be recalled if requested by another user.
  • Books may be renewed once by calling 973-618-3337, or on line in CALCAT under My Account.
  • Audio-visual materials may be checked out overnight or viewed in the library.
  • Journals and reference books do not circulate.

Graduate Students

  • Books may be checked out for an entire semester but are always due at the end of the semester.
  • No more than 50 books may be checked out at any one time.
  • Items may be recalled if requested by another user.
  • Audio-visual materials may be checked out for 2 weeks or viewed in the library.
  • Journals and reference books do not circulate.

Faculty

  • Books may be checked out for an entire semester but are always due at the end of each semester.
  • There is no limit on the number of books that can be checked out at one time.
  • Items may be recalled if requested by another user.
  • Audio-visual materials may be borrowed for 2 weeks or viewed in the library.
  • Journals and reference books do not circulate.

Staff

  • Books may be checked out for 6 weeks.
  • No more than 10 books may be checked out at any one time.
  • Items may be recalled if requested by another user.
  • Books may be renewed once by calling 973-618-3337, or on line in CALCAT under My Account.
  • Audio-visual materials may be checked out for 2 weeks or viewed in the library.
  • Journals and reference books do not circulate

Alumni

  • Books may be checked out for 4 weeks.
  • No more than 3 books may be checked out at any one time.
  • Books may not be renewed.
  • Items may be recalled if requested by another user.
  • Audio-visual materials may be viewed in the library only.
  • Journals and reference books do not circulate.

HOLDS

  • Holds may be placed on items that are checked out to another person.
  • Individuals will be notified by the Circulation Department when the item is available.
  • The item will be held for pick-up at the Circulation Desk for 7 days.

RECALLS

  • Books needed for course reserves may be recalled at any time. All other books may be recalled after they have been checked out for two weeks.
  • Recalled books must be returned within five days of receiving a notice from the circulation department.
  • Faculty may recall CDs, DVDs and videos for class use.
  • Recalled CDs, DVDs and videos must be returned within 24 hours of receiving a notice from the Circulation Department.

RESERVE REQUESTS

Materials are placed on reserve at the request of the faculty or when they are likely to be in high demand at some point during the semester. A current list of items on Reserve is available in CALCAT.

  • Reserve items are located at the Circulation Desk.
  • Reserve materials may be checked out for up to 2 hours, unless stipulated by faculty.
  • Reserve materials may not be removed from the Library.
  • Borrowers may only check out 1 Reserve item at a time.

FINES

Individuals are responsible for any overdue, lost, or damaged items charged out in their name and are subject to the following fines:

Overdue Books

  • $.25 per day for each overdue book.
  • $1.00 per hour for each overdue Reserve item.
  • $2.00 per day for each overdue item that has been recalled.
  • $.50 per day for each overdue CD.
  • $2.00 per day for each overdue video or DVD.

Damaged & Lost Items

  • Damaged materials are subject to a $10.00 non-refundable processing fee plus damage assessment, depending upon extent of damage.
  • The base charge for a lost book is $50 plus a $10 processing fee. The Library reserves the right to adjust that charge to align with the actual cost of replacement.

LIBRARY NOTICES

Notices are a courtesy. FAILURE TO RECEIVE A NOTICE DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A BASIS FOR ALTERING A FINE. Library patrons are responsible for notifying the library of any changes of address or other information.
