Malware on Campus Computers

The latest version of our anti-virus software, Sophos, has been enhanced to detect and remove malware from your PC. "Malware" is short for malicious software and is typically used as a catch-all term to refer to any software designed to cause damage to a single computer, server, or computer network, whether it's a virus, spyware, pop-up ads, etc. Malware can track your internet browsing, install unwanted software, and even collect account numbers and passwords.

It is recommended that organizations fully implement a malware eradicator as protection for the internal network and to safeguard the information contained on our computers.

With this new Sophos software in effect, you may notice that some toolbars (that have been identified as potentially damaging) may disappear from your desktop. Toolbars that may be affected include MyWebSearch, Hotbar, Couponbar, and WeatherBug. Some computers we have tested have required a reboot after removal of the software and a few have needed more attention.

If you have any concerns or computer difficulties, please contact the help desk at ext. 2222 and the issue will be directed to the appropriate person in the IT department.
