

Spam is the most common problem that comes through email. Unwanted mail, bulk mail, and fraudulent mail are all forms of spam — and they all pose risks to the college email. Spam can gobble storage space, bandwidth, and server load, making our email system less efficient.
In July of 2005 Caldwell College began using a package called PureMessage to scan your e-mail for viruses and spam. In the Fall of 2008 we added the Sophos E-mail Appliance to give us another layer of protection. Together they scan all e-mail before it gets to your mailbox.
If your e-mail address receives any message that our filtering software considers spam the software will put it into your quarantine. You can also manage your personal quarantine by approving or blocking senders using the web site listed below. You will receive an e-mail once a week showing any new spam that has been captured in the last 7 days but you can also access this site at any time.
How to email spam, and false-positive spam samples to SophosLabs
It is preferred that you send samples as RFC-2822 attachments. Submitting in any other format can cause the loss of key message content, which may prevent SophosLabs from effectively analyzing the samples.

1. Create a new email message
2. Address it to : is-spam@labs.sophos.com : not-spam@labs.sophos.com
3. Drag and drop the selected item(s) into the new email.
4. Send the email
Managing your quarantined messages:
1. Go to https://asf.caldwell.edu
2. Login using your NETID (Email username and password).
3. Your quarantined messages will be listed in the “Blocked Messages” box.
Blocked Messages:
Deliver Message: If you would like to receive this message in your inbox.
Delete message: If you do not want the message, please select delete message.
Deliver and Approve Sender: If you would like to receive this message in your inbox and approve the sender of the email.
Delete All: If you would like to delete all messages that have been quarantined.
Deleted Messages: Deleted messages allow you to retrieve recent quarantined message that you deleted and would like to restore.
Approved Senders: If you have important email messages that are going to your quarantined items list, you may add them to the approved senders list.
Blocked Senders: If you are receiving unwanted email messages, you can add the email address to the blocked senders list, which will prevent the messages from reaching your inbox.
Option: If you do not like receiving the periodic emails providing you with a list of your quarantined emails, you can uncheck the box and you will no longer receive the messages.
Managing Virus Attachments:
The message below is an example of what you will get if a message that was sent to you contains a virus. It tells you who sent you the message, the name of the attachment, the name of the virus that was detected and if it was able to be disinfected or not. Most viruses that are sent by e-mail are files that were written to be a virus and there is no way of disinfecting the file.
