John J. Degnan, Senior Advisor to CEO, Retired COO & Vice Chairman
The Chubb Corporation
John J. Degnan retired as Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of The Chubb Corporation on December 31, 2010. He currently serves as senior advisor to the CEO of The Chubb Corporation.
Mr. Degnan served as Vice Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer of The Chubb Corporation since December of 2002 and served as Chief Ethics Officer from 2005. He has held various titles since joining Chubb & Son, a division of Federal Insurance Company, in 1990, including Senior Vice President and General Counsel. In September of 1996 he was elected President of The Chubb Corporation and also became President of Chubb & Son.
Mr. Degnan served on the boards of the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters; the School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science, St. John’sUniversity and continues to serve as a trustee for St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, Saint Barnabas Medical Center and Barnabas Health. He is also member of the Governor’s Advisory Committee on Judicial Appointment. Recently, he has been appointed to the President’s Federal Advisory Council on Insurance.
After working as a law secretary for the late New Jersey Supreme Court Justice John Francis, Mr. Degnan joined the Newark, NJ law firm of Clapp & Eisenberg. In 1974, he was appointed assistant counsel to Brendan T. Byrne, Governor of New Jersey, becoming Chief Counsel to the Governor in 1977. He was appointed Attorney General of the State of New Jersey in 1978 and served until 1981 when he became a senior partner with Shanley & Fisher, specializing in administrative law.
Mr. Degnan graduated from Saint Vincent’s College magna cum laude in 1966 and from Harvard Law School with a Juris Doctor degree in 1969. He received honorary degrees from the College of St. Elizabeth in 1978 and from SetonHallUniversity in 1979.
Bernard M. Flynn, Esq., CPCU
NJM is the leading provider of workers’ compensation and personal auto insurance in New Jersey and also offers commercial auto, homeowners, flood and umbrella insurance.
Since joining NJM in 1993 as a staff attorney, Mr. Flynn subsequently was named Vice President and General Counsel in 2001 and Senior Vice President and General Counsel in 2004. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Insurance Company in 2003 and the Board of NJM Bank in 2004.
Before joining NJM, Mr. Flynn was a New Jersey Deputy Attorney General from 1987 to 1993, serving as Counsel for the Commissioner of Insurance from 1991 to 1993. He is currently Chairman of Choose New Jersey, an independent, privately funded and managed non-profit corporation inspired by Gov. Chris Christie to promote New Jersey as a place to invest and do business.
He has served as a Trustee for Public Media NJ, Inc. since 2011 and as a board Member of the New Jersey Network (NJN) Foundation from 2009-2011. He has been a Member of the New Jersey Chapter/Eastern Division of CEOs Against Cancer since 2011; Board Member of Junior Achievement of NJ from 2010-2012; and Member of the Property Casualty Insurers (PCI) Board of Governors since 2008.
Several committees benefited from Mr. Flynn’s expertise during a time of great change in the New Jersey personal auto insurance market. From 1999-2002 he served as a Member of the New Jersey Insurance Department’s Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Technical Advisory Committee, from 2000-2001 he was a Member of the New Jersey Insurance Underwriting Association and in 2001 Co-Chaired Governor-Elect McGreevey’s Banking and Insurance Transition Team. From 1999 to 2001, Mr. Flynn served as Secretary of the Insurance Council of New Jersey (ICNJ).
He graduated from Rutgers University School of Law in 1986 after obtaining his B.S. from Fordham University in 1982. In 2001, Mr. Flynn earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) Designation.
Mr. Flynn and his wife, Ann, live in Delran, NJ. They have two children.
