MISSION IN ACTION STAFF EXCELLENCE AWARD

PURPOSE:
The Mission in Action Staff Excellence Award recognizes the extraordinary contributions and quality service of our College staff (non-exempt and exempt) and their integral role in advancing Caldwell College’s mission.

ELIGIBILITY:
All regular staff members, full-time and part-time are eligible, provided that they are in good standing and have been employed, by Caldwell College, a minimum of two years at the time of nomination. Previous award recipients are ineligible.

The award will be selected by staff members serving on the Mission in Action Selection Committee. To avoid possible conflicts of interest, members of the Mission in Action Selection Committee are not eligible to nominate or be nominated during their service on this committee.

CRITERIA:
To honor and recognize a staff member who has made a significant positive impact within their Department or across the College. Fostering the mission of the College, the individual has demonstrated his/her willingness to fulfill job-related responsibilities in light of the Dominican ideals and has made a conscious effort at improving his/her area or the College at large.

The following examples are meant to serve as guidelines for nominations:

  • Provides superior service to the population they serve
  • Is an enthusiastic ambassador of Caldwell College
  • Fosters collaboration, communication and cooperation
  • Supports campus activities and events
  • Demonstrates a positive and enthusiastic approach to their job

NOMINATIONS:
The Caldwell College community (staff, students, faculty, administrators and alumni) is invited to participate in nominations. All nominations should include specific and current examples of the staff member's achievements and contributions that reflect the principle criteria and attributes mentioned above. Nominations will be accepted online.

Nominations will be submitted to the Mission in Action Selection Committee and must include the nominator’s name and contact information. Nominations must be submitted by March 28, 2011 at 12 noon.

SELECTION PROCESS:
All nominations will be kept confidential. The Committee will be comprised of the Caldwell College Staff Council Executive Board and previous award recipients. Once all nominees’ eligibility has been verified, the Committee will make its final selection.

The Mission in Action Selection Committee will make its recommendation to the President of Caldwell College, who will present the award at the annual Honors Convocation.

Caldwell Cup

Message from the President

As most of you will recall, in 1987 a prestigious award, the Caldwell Cup, was established to honor a College employee who made a unique contribution to the campus. The 2011 award will be presented at the Honors Convocation on Saturday, May 3. All College employees and all students are welcome to submit nominations, which will be reviewed by a committee made up of faculty, administration and student representatives. Please give careful consideration to the attached criteria and return the nomination form to my office by Friday, April 22. Thank you for your prompt response.

Teaching in Excellence

To recognize the college’s commitment to and support of excellent teaching. This award is presented at the annual Honors Convocation to the faculty member who best exhibits excellence in teaching, passion and enthusiasm for learning, and genuine concern for students’ academic and personal growth. The winner of the award will be recognized on a plaque prominently displayed in the Hall of Excellence.

Eligibility:
•Nominees must be full-time faculty who have completed at least three years of full-time teaching at Caldwell College. •Nominees may teach either undergraduate or graduate students or both. •Faculty may not self-nominate for this award. •Excellence in Teaching Award winners from the past five years are not eligible.

Nominations: All members of the Caldwell College community (students, faculty, administration, staff and alumni) may submit a one page letter by Friday, April 23, 2010 in support of a nomination that addresses the criteria for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Nominations should be submitted to the Office of the Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs and must include the nominator’s name and contact information. Electronic submissions are accepted and may be sent to pdouilla@caldwell.edu.

Criteria of Excellence: The letter of nomination should address the nominees accomplishments based on the following criteria:
Is intellectually demanding and rigorous
Demonstrates scholarly engagement in the discipline.
Promotes critical thinking.
Relates course material when appropriate to other fields, contemporary issues, and student experiences.
Is deeply committed to teaching and students
Demonstrates enthusiasm in the teaching and learning process.
Is conscientious, organized, and well prepared.
Shows concern for individual students and their development.
Is readily available to students.
Communicates exceptionally well with students in the presentation or teaching of course content
Provides clear expectations, relevant assignments, and formative and summative feedback.
Presents material clearly, asks good questions (asks questions that promote critical thinking), and adjusts strategies as necessary.
Stimulates student interest and participation.
Is open-minded; fair-minded and respectful of differences among students

Selection Process: •Nominations will be reviewed by a committee composed of four tenured faculty members from different departments/divisions, two students (one traditional student and one from the Center for Graduate and Continuing Studies) and the Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs.
•Following the review of the nominations, the committee will contact a select number of nominees and the chairs/associate deans of their departments/divisions to request additional information.
•The committee will make its recommendation to the President who will present the award at the annual Honors Convocation.
