Academic Internships, Co-Ops

Internships and co-op positions help students integrate classroom knowledge with hands-on experience in the workplace. Students work with faculty advisors to develop learning objectives based on the job assignment and job description. Three credits and a grade are awarded for each completed assignment based on demonstrated learning/knowledge gained, and approximately 120 hours are required for each assignment.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

  • Internships are available in virtually every major course of study.
  • You may register for up to two assignments, one per semester, for a total of six credits.
  • You are eligible to participate if you have completed 60 credits (junior status) and have at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • Internships are unpaid learning opportunities, in which students typically work 10-15 hours per week; co-op positions are paid, and students may work up to 20 hours a week.
  • To receive credit, begin the process early (well before the semester in which you plan to enroll for credit). You must secure a position, receive faculty advisor approval and obtain and complete registration paperwork, all before the end of the semester’s drop/add period. You must register for your internship or co-op experience before you log hours.
  • Career Planning and Development can help you find internships, navigate the registration process and make the most of your experience.
  • Academic credit is awarded under the guidance of a faculty advisor.

BENEFITS OF INTERNSHIPS and CO-OPS:
