Caldwell University Jennings Library to Present Author of “Orphan Train”
Sep 13 @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Christina Baker Kline

Caldwell, N.J. – August 16, 2013 - Caldwell University Jennings Library will present Christina Baker-Kline, author of “Orphan Train” at noon Friday Sept. 13.   The author visit and book discussion is free and open to the public.

Orphan Train“Orphan Train” is a novel highlighting the orphan trains that ran from East coast cities to Midwest farmlands from 1854 to 1929 carrying thousands of abandoned children. This little-known period in American history became the premise of the book.   .

The power of human resilience and unexpected friendship are at the heart of this novel. Kline seamlessly blends contemporary and historical storylines, while alternating between present-day Maine, where readers meet seventeen-year-old foster child and Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer and 91-year-old Irish immigrant Vivian Daly, and Minnesota in the early 20th century, where readers learn about Vivian’s past.

Kline is the author of five novels, including Bird in Hand and The Way Life Should Be.  Writer-in-Residence at Fordham University from 2007-2011, Kline is a recent recipient of a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Fellowship and several research fellowships (to Ireland and Minnesota), and has been a Writer-in-Residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.  She lives with husband and three sons in Montclair, New Jersey, and spends as much time as possible in northern Minnesota and on the coast of Maine, where she grew up.  For more information,  visit her Facebook author page www.facebook.com/CBakerKline and on the web at www.christinabakerkline.com.

It was also where they learned how to start a business, build a congregation, educate their children, and lobby the government. Join fellow Caldwell University alumni in a walking tour of this fascinating neighborhood and find out why it is such an ever-changing mix of the old and the new.

Cost for the event is $14 per person and includes walking tour only.  This walking tour does not go into buildings; the anticipated tour time is two hours. This program is recommended for ages 8 and up.
