Caldwell University Jennings Library to Present Author of “Orphan Train”
Sep 13 @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Christina Baker Kline

Caldwell, N.J. – August 16, 2013 - Caldwell University Jennings Library will present Christina Baker-Kline, author of “Orphan Train” at noon Friday Sept. 13.   The author visit and book discussion is free and open to the public.

Orphan Train“Orphan Train” is a novel highlighting the orphan trains that ran from East coast cities to Midwest farmlands from 1854 to 1929 carrying thousands of abandoned children. This little-known period in American history became the premise of the book.   .

The power of human resilience and unexpected friendship are at the heart of this novel. Kline seamlessly blends contemporary and historical storylines, while alternating between present-day Maine, where readers meet seventeen-year-old foster child and Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer and 91-year-old Irish immigrant Vivian Daly, and Minnesota in the early 20th century, where readers learn about Vivian’s past.

Kline is the author of five novels, including Bird in Hand and The Way Life Should Be.  Writer-in-Residence at Fordham University from 2007-2011, Kline is a recent recipient of a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Fellowship and several research fellowships (to Ireland and Minnesota), and has been a Writer-in-Residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.  She lives with husband and three sons in Montclair, New Jersey, and spends as much time as possible in northern Minnesota and on the coast of Maine, where she grew up.  For more information,  visit her Facebook author page and on the web at

ABA Workshop – The Functional Analysis of Problem Behaviors: Practice and Research
Sep 27 @ 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

kahngSungWoo Kahng, Ph.D., BCBA-D
Kennedy Krieger Institute and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Download the registration brochure for the workshop.

The functional analysis of problem behaviors (Iwata, Dorsey, Slifer, Richman, & Bauman, 1982/1994) exhibited by individuals with developmental disabilities has become the gold standard of care during the treatment of these problem behaviors. Yet, there are commonly held misconception about its use. The first part of this presentation will describe the use of functional analyses to develop effective behavioral interventions as well as the research that supports its use. The second half of the presentation will discuss commonly held views about the use of functional analyses in practice (e.g., too difficult, not useful for all behaviors/individuals, unsafe) in terms of what are valid and invalid concerns.

Board Certified Behavior Analysts can earn 6 Type II CEs at each workshop!

Caldwell University is an approved provider of BCBA Type II continuing education credits (BACB® ACE Provider OP-09-0207).
