OVERVIEW

Caldwell College is the perfect place for busy adults to earn their Bachelor’s Degree. The Center for Continuing Education (CE) at Caldwell College is dedicated to the success of our Adult Students. CE provides one-on-one advisement and support to Adult Students from admissions through graduation. We will be with you all the way. CE serves the adult population (over 23 years old) and any student who attends college part-time.

Caldwell College provides an environment tailored to the needs of busy adults. This is demonstrated by the flexible course offerings schedule and evening office hours of the Academic Advisors in CE. The same curriculum, courses, faculty, and support services available to traditional age students are made available to adults at times convenient for them. Each adult can select courses convenient for their schedule. Course are offered during the day and evenings, in the Saturday Accelerated format and in the External (Distance Learning) format.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

The College offers adult undergraduate students a unique Bachelor of Art’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies in either the humanities or social sciences. Students admitted to these majors must have at least 60 transfer credits. Students can select from a degree in Multidisciplinary Studies/ Humanities with concentrations in: art history, communications, English, history, philosophy, or theology. Or a degree in Multidisciplinary Studies/Social Sciences with a concentration in: business administration, political science, psychology, and sociology.

SECOND DEGREE

A candidate for a second degree, holding a prior Caldwell College degree, must complete a minimum of thirty-three (33) additional credits including all requirements for a different major.

Candidates for a second degree, holding a prior degree from another institution, must complete a minimum of forty-five (45) credits including all requirements for a different major.

KNOWLEDGE EQUIVALENT CREDIT

Caldwell College provides its students with the opportunity to earn credits through alternatives to course instruction. Academic advisors can inform students in detail about the following options:

  • Credit by examination, through one of the following standardized testing services: CLEP, DANTES, OHIO, TECEP
  • Credit for non-collegiate military or corporate training courses accredited by the American
  • Council on Education
  • Credit for Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

Prior Learning Assessment is a process by which portfolios are developed with the assistance of a PLA counselor. Students wishing to qualify for college credit for knowledge acquired in career, volunteer work, or a vocation may choose this method. Portfolios are evaluated by Caldwell College faculty. A maximum of 18 credits may be earned through PLA after the student has completed 12 credits at Caldwell College. Fees for PLA are less than tuition for the equivalent courses.

FACULTY

Caldwell faculty are passionately engaged in their teaching and student mentoring. At Caldwell College, all classes are taught by faculty members, not graduate assistants. There are very few classes with over 25 students and nearly 75% of faculty hold doctorates or terminal degrees in their field.

PERSONALIZED ACADEMIC ADVISING

The Academic Advisors of the Center for Continuing Education offer inpidualized guidance to all students: new and returning; On-Campus and External Degree; and degree or certificate candidates. Advisement includes: evaluation of prior credits for advanced standing; review of curricular requirements and progress towards meeting academic goals; choice of future courses; class scheduling; and registration procedures. Advisors are available throughout the year for day or evening appointments, and should be consulted regularly.

HONOR SOCIETIES

Adult students are eligible to become members of the various honor societies established at Caldwell College. Of special interest to adult students is Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society which recognizes adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work.

ACADEMIC FORGIVENESS

Students who have been at Caldwell College in the past and may not have done well academically may consider reentry through the Academic Forgiveness Policy. This is only available to students entering into the Adult Undergraduate Degree Programs and may only be done during their first semester returning. Students who have been away from Caldwell College for at least six years are eligible to reenter using this policy. Whether or not Academic Forgiveness is granted is at the discretion of the VP/Dean of Academic Affairs. If granted, all previous academic work will not be used in the computation of the grade point average or in the determination of good standing for probation and dismissal purposes.

Only grades of C or better will be used toward completion of the degree and the students GPA will begin to calculate at the point of reentry with a NEW GPA (all Ds and Fs will not be used toward the degree). The students final GPA will be based upon the last 45 credits taken at Caldwell College. A student must complete at least 60 credits from this point forward with the proper GPA to be awarded honors at graduation.

Academic Forgiveness will only be granted once in a student’s academic career at the College.
