I-20 Application Information

New International Students without a valid F-1 Visa

International students will require a student visa to enter the United States. The Office of International Student Services (OISS) is the College’s office responsible for assisting admitted international students with obtaining the necessary documents for their visas and assisting their entry to the US. Working closely with the College’s Admissions offices, OISS facilitates the following steps in the immigration document process:

  1. Student is admitted to Caldwell University
  2. The Admission Office sends an international student their admission letter
  3. The Admission Office assigns a 6-digit Student ID and uploads the student’s data to our online portal. You will then have full access to your own student portal as an incoming student
  4. Student receives instructions to apply for their I-20 through Admissions.
  5. Student submits a completed application for the I-20, with financial certification and copy of student passport to OISS (International@caldwell.edu)
  6. OISS prepares a US Visa Eligibility Document (I-20).  Processing may take 2 – 3 weeks in peak season
  7. I-20 Form is mailed to the student:
    • The I-20 is typically mailed to the student by OISS. If you wish to have the I-20 picked up by someone in the US and mailed to you personally you can choose this by emailing OISS. As a standard practice, each student is responsible for paying for their original I-20 mailing. After receiving an email notification that your I-20 will be issued, please visit https://study.eshipglobal.com/ where you can click “Student Sign-up”, complete the registration form, and pay for your shipping using an approved payment method.
    • Once a student has submitted a complete I-20 application, they should access the student portal (https://my.caldwell.edu/ics). Under the Student Life tab you will see our International Student page located as an option on the left side of your screen. Please visit the For New Students Only section where you will find visa application guidance, Health forms, and Housing contracts.
  8. Student must attain an F-1 student Visa:

*If Your Visa is Denied

  • Be polite – you may be very upset and frustrated, but argument will work against you. Remember, you will have to deal with this person again, so do your best not to give him or her a bad impression.
  • Ask the consular officer to give you a written explanation of your denial. He or she is required to do so upon request.
  • Scan and send a copy of your denial letter from the Consulate to OISS so that we can assist you in better preparing for your follow-up interview.

You are legally allowed to reapply within a twelve-month period of your first denial. When reapplying, make sure to carefully put together your case, add new evidence and make sure that you are able to discount the reasons of your first denial.

International Students with a valid F-1 Visa

Some international students may already have attained an F-1 Visa. If you are transferring from another school and you are living in the US, or you left a previous school and went home but still have an F-1 Visa that will not expire by your program start date, you can skip the Visa interview process entirely. Your I-20 application process will be processed as follows:

  7. Once a student has submitted a complete I-20 application, they should access the student portal (https://my.caldwell.edu/ics). Under the Student Life tab you will see our International Student page located as an option on the left side of your screen. Please visit the For New Students Only section where you will find Health forms you must complete, and Housing contracts if you plan to live on campus.
