REQUIREMENTS FOR A MUSIC MINOR

Acceptance as a minor into the music department will be based upon:

  1. Acceptance into the College
  2. Satisfactory completion (C or higher) of MU 117 Music Fundamentals OR passing of a waiver exam
  3. Satisfactory audition showing proficiency with the primary instrument or voice including sight-reading, required scales and repertoire (see department handbook for audition requirements)
  4. Provisional acceptance may be off e red if the faculty feels that the student is capable of meeting the specific requirements for acceptance, given an additional designated time to prepare; and is capable of success in the major.
  5. Transfer students must audition for acceptance and take a theory placement exam

Students are urged to apply and audition for placement as they enter the College. If not accepted as a major at this time they may take private lessons and music fundamentals, participate in ensembles and performance class and re-audition in March of their Freshman year.

Students who wish to minor in music must complete twenty (20) credits within the Department. These must include:

  • MU 103
  • MU 104 (Music Theory I and II)
  • MU 118
  • MU 119 (Sight-Singing and Ear Training I & II)
  • MU 126
  • MU 127 (Keyboard Harmony I and II)
  • MU 206
  • MU 207 (Music History and Literature I and II)
  • plus four (4) credits of electives, chosen from either classes or applied music.
