REQUIREMENTS FOR A BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MUSIC
Acceptance as a major in the music department will be based upon:
- Acceptance into the College
- Satisfactory completion (C or higher) of MU 117 Music Fundamentals OR passing of a waiver exam
- Satisfactory audition showing proficiency with the primary instrument or voice including sight-reading, required scales and repertoire (see department handbook for audition requirements)
- Provisional acceptance may be off e red if the faculty feels that the student is capable of meeting the specific requirements for acceptance, given an additional designated time to prepare; and is capable of success in the major.
- Transfer students must audition for acceptance and take a theory placement exam
Students are urged to apply and audition for placement as they enter the College. If not accepted as a major at this time they may take private lessons and music fundamentals, participate in ensembles and performance class and re-audition in March of their Freshman year.
Credit Requirements for a Bachelor of Arts in Music:
Liberal Arts and Sciences Core: 57 credits
Music: 45 credits
Open Electives: 18 credits
Total: 120 credits
Students who major in Music must complete:
- MU 103 Theory I
- MU 104 Theory II
- MU 118 Sight-Singing and Ear Training I
- MU 119 Sight-Singing and Ear Training II
- MU 126 Keyboard Harmony I
- MU 127 Keyboard Harmony II
- MU 203 Theory III
- MU 206 History and Literature of Music I
- MU 207 History and Literature of Music II
- MU 218 Sight-Singing and Ear Training III
- MU 226 Keyboard Harmony III
- MU 310 Conducting
- MU 425 Style, Form and Analysis
- One music elective for three (3) credits
- MU 499 Senior Recital or Research Project
- Twelve (12) credits in Applied/Performing Music, determined in consultation with their advisor, from the following:
- MU 101 Applied Music (Instrument or Voice) - to include at least 6 semesters of private lessons on primary instrument and 2 semesters of piano
- MU 125 College Choir
- MU 130 Opera Workshop
- MU 135 Wind Ensemble
- MU 140 Jazz Ensemble
Sophomore Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated at the end of their sophomore year and a recommendation will be made as to whether they may continue as a major. This recommendation will be based upon:
- Satisfactory completion of Theory I, II, and III (Grade of C or higher)
- Satisfactory progress on their chosen instrument or voice, based upon a “Jury hearing” by at least two faculty including their private teacher, at the completion of their sophomore year or 4th semester of private study (whichever comes first.)
Students who are not able to pass these requirements may use their credits for a minor, and are encouraged to continue to participate in ensembles and lessons, but will not continue as music majors.
