


REQUIREMENTS FOR A BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ELEMENTARY/SECONDARY EDUCATION
Degree: Bachelor of Arts
Liberal Arts Core: 55 credits
Behavioral/Social Science: 9 credits
Education Program: 30 credits
Selected Liberal Arts/Science Major: 30 credits
Total: 124 credits
Students seeking admission to the Division of Education are subject to the Standards for Baccalaureate Teacher Education Programs at Public Colleges and Universities, N.J.A.C. 6:11-7 and 9:2-12.1 through 12.4 and to subsequent revisions as noted by the Department of Education of the State of New Jersey. Caldwell College is approved for the programs offered at this college through the NJ/NASDTEC: New Jersey/National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification. As a result, students completing these programs qualify in the Certification Reciprocity Systems among the States.
Students seeking admission to the Division of Education are governed by the standards of Caldwell College which are in accord with statutes of the State of New Jersey governing Baccalaureate Teaching Education Program. Periodic review of programs may result in changes which will be publicly noted for the benefit of student information.
Advisement and course selection approval is essential prior to each registration in order that the student select courses necessary to the program. The College does not insure that the student will complete these requirements in a four-year sequence.
Students are recommended to the New Jersey State Department of Education for Certificates of Eligibility with Advanced Standing from Caldwell College. These candidates will complete their first year of employment (referred to as the induction year) under the guidance of a school district support team, and if successful, will be recommended for a permanent New Jersey teaching certificate. (NJ.A.C. 6:11-5.3) The ETS Praxis summary pass rates: August 2002 (100%).
LIBERAL ARTS /SCIENCE MAJORS
In compliance with the standards of the State of New Jersey, students seeking to major in elementary education at Caldwell College must also complete a second academic major in one of the following fields of study:
P-3, EARLY CHILDHOOD ENDORSEMENT AND K-8, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER CERTIFICATE
The program for early childhood and elementary education is designed for students who wish to earn elementary education certificate (K - 8) and specialize in early childhood to earn a Teacher of Preschool through grade three license. (P - 3). The dual program is a 36 credit program.
SPECIALIZED ALTERNATE ROUTE FOR PRESCHOOL, P-3
This 19 credit early childhood program is designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree and a certificate of eligibility from the State Department of Education.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER CERTIFICATION
The program for certification in grades K - 8 is an integrated liberal arts professional curriculum planned inter-departmentally to relate most closely to the content and process of public school teaching.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WITH SUBJECT MATTER SPECIALIZATION
The program for elementary school with subject matter endorsement is designed for elementary education students who wish to earn subject matter specialization in English, mathematics, social studies or science. This middle school endorsement is in addition to elementary school (K–8) endorsement.
SPECIFIC SUBJECT CERTIFICATION
The program for teaching a specific subject, grades K-12, includes the satisfactory completion of one of the following majors: Art, Biology, English, French, Mathematics, Music, Social Studies, or Spanish, and the completion of a prescribed number of education courses. The student must meet all the requirements of the Education Department concerning admissions, continuance, and completion of the program.

Courses must be taken sequentially. However, ED 470 and ED 475 are taken concurrently. * Students are required to complete all coursework in the core and the major prior to taking ED 470 and ED 475.
STUDENT TEACHING
Admission to Student Teaching is dependent upon satisfactory completion of all academic course work in related and core studies and demonstration of compliance with the standards of Teacher Baccalaureate Pre-Service Programs. A formal application must be made with the Director of Field Experiences according to the guidelines established by the Education Department. Practical field experience is afforded every education student through course work and through student teaching. Students teach full time in designated schools during their last semester of their senior year and are under the direction of a master teacher and the College Coordinator.
STATEMENT OF OUTCOMES ASSESMENT
All education students must successfully complete Ed 470 Student Teaching and Ed 475 Student Teaching Seminar as the capstone graduation requirement.
