ADVISEMENT SERVICES
Freshmen Placement
The
Student Academic Affairs Office places all freshmen into their courses
for their first semester at Caldwell. Students are scheduled for courses
that meet their academic and programmatic needs. This individualized approach
reflects a review of each freshmen’s high school records including course
work, grades, SAT scores and placement test results, as well as the courses
required for the intended major.
Academic Advisement
All freshmen advisement and registration occurs under the direction of our office. Upper-class students with undeclared majors are advised by the Office of Students Academic Affairs and Advisement. Undecided students are encouraged to explore the services of the Career Development Center.
Transfer Advisement
The transcripts of students wishing to transfer to Caldwell College are initially reviewed and evaluated by the Director of Academic Advisement. The Director meets with each transfer student to select and schedule classes for their first semester at the college. Although Transfer students come to Caldwell with a familiarity with college life, we feel it is important to orient them to the wide array of resources and services available to them at Caldwell. Advisement Workshops specifically designed for transfer students are offered throughout the semester in order to provide information to students relating to Caldwell's Core and major curricula as well as web advisement and registration procedures. Students are always welcome and encouraged to visit the advisement office during the course of the semester with any questions they may have concerning their academic experience at Caldwell. Students wishing to transfer to Caldwell need only to complete an application from the transfer student page of our website.
A great resource for students wishing to transfer from a NJ Community College to a four-year college or university is NJ Transfer. NJ Transfer is a web-based information system designed to provide transfer course information for students wishing to transfer from one of the nineteen New Jersey community colleges to New Jersey's four-year colleges and universities. At the NJ Transfer web site, www.njtransfer.org, students can learn which courses to select at a community college and discover how these courses will satisfy the degree requirements at New Jersey four-year colleges and universities.
Web-Based Advisement Module
Another resource available to Caldwell students is the Web-Based Advisement Module. Early in the semester, students are given a password which enables them to access their academic records and program requirements. This on-line tool is utilized in conjunction with the College Catalog and the input of academic advisors. Training workshops are presented to students in order to acquaint them with the College's Web-Based Advisement Module. Once oriented, students may access their progress toward graduation in both the Core and their academic major. They also have the ability to view their grades at the end of each semester and register for class after they have consulted with their faculty academic advisor. All students are encouraged to make use of the many features our web-based advisement system has to offer.
CALDWELL'S FRESHMEN PROGRAMS
TSD - Total Student Development (Freshman Seminar)
Total Student Development is a one-credit course required
for all freshmen. TSD is designed to assist students with their transition
to college and to enable them to grow intellectually and personally.
Through
weekly goal oriented sessions, students learn how to take charge of their
education by learning strategies for time management, organizational skills,
note taking, and about the many resources within the college. The purpose
is to provide students with the tools necessary to be successful in their
college careers. A very unique aspect of the TSD program is that the weekly
sessions are conducted by the student's academic advisor.
The TSD Advisors play an important role in the life of our freshmen. This group of faculty members and administrators are specially trained to guide students through the sometimes complex advisement and registration process. We believe that the year-long individual advisement with the same advisor helps students to develop the independence they need to be successful.
STUDENT OUTREACH SYSTEM
The Student Outreach System is a retention strategy designed to identify freshmen who are having difficulties in a given course. Professors identify students who are then contacted by their advisor so that the student can take steps, such as tutoring offered at no fee by the Academic Support Center, to improve their performance in the class. Students may be identified for a variety of reasons, including absences, lateness or the quality of their work.
The goal of the SOS program is not to penalize students, but rather to address academic concerns early on in the semester so that a student can utilize interventions to successfully complete the course. If students receive an SOS , they are encouraged to speak to their instructor.
STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM
Well-qualified
students are encouraged to study abroad during their junior year or during
the summer if such study is advantageous. Students desiring to do so should
plan their program with their departmental advisor and present it in writing
for approval to the Assistant Dean for Student Academic Affairs. Credit
and grades for all study abroad programs will be transferred and included
in the GPA.
For more information, visit the Study Abroad & Short Term Travel Experience page.
SHORT TERM TRAVEL EXPERIENCE
Caldwell College offers short term travel experiences to a wide range of locations throughout the world. Students are accompanied by Faculty members who both design and present courses in a variety of academic disciplines. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to gain a practical understanding of the culture and customs of the country while immersing themselves in the course material. Short term travel opportunities are normally taken during winter or summer session and are usually one to three weeks in duration. Students must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA and are limited to six credits or two short travel experiences. These courses may not be taken as an audit.
For more information, visit the Study Abroad & Short Term Travel Experience page.
SUPPORT FOR STUDENT/ATHLETES
The Director of Academic Advisement works closely with all of Caldwell’s Student/Athletes to assist them in maintaining satisfactory academic standing.
During registration:
The Director meets with all athletes to minimize the number of class/game conflicts during the season of competition.
Student/athletes must obtain a second signature on their registration form prior to registration to confirm their course times for the coming semester.
At Mid-Semester:
The grades of all athletes are reviewed to determine if intervention by the Academic Support Center or other college resource would be helpful and necessary.
The Director meets with each athlete to counsel and make recommendations for improvement where necessary.
Athletes who are in season:
Have the ability to register for classes "First Day Option" which gives the opportunity to choose courses which will not conflict with their sports schedule.
Are provided with absentee notes to verify absences due to class/game conflicts. To view the student athlete attendance policy, click here.
Understand that they are, at all times, responsible and accountable for all assignments and class work missed due to an athletic competition.
We provide all of our student/athletes with assistance in organizational skills and time management issues unique to athletes. They are always encouraged to utilize the many resources and services available on campus.
