The Caldwell University Chorale is a mixed voice ensemble of Caldwell students, faculty and staff, and community members directed by Dr. Laura Greenwald, assisted by accompanist Warren Helms. Chorale members come from as near as Caldwell and as far as Ghana and include music majors, music minors and music lovers. The chorale performs on the Christmas Spectacular! and Music Department Spring concert each year, and sings for all major campus masses and events. In April they participate in a choral festival at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Manhattan.
Each fall the chorale serves as the chorus for the Garden State Opera productions, which have recently included L’Elisir D’Amore and Il Campanello (Donizetti), Le Villi and Suor Angelica (Puccini) and L’Oca del Cairo (Mozart.) On Sunday, October 25, 2015 the performance will include Puccini’s Il Tabarro and scenes from Monteverdi’s Orfeo .In October of 2010, Caldwell students performed major roles in the World Premiere of Il Negozio, a one act opera composed for them by GSO Artistic Director, Francesco Santelli.
Our concert repertoire ranges from choral standards such as Palestrina’s “Sicut Cervus” and Bernstein’s “Warm Up” to contemporary works by Ola Gjeilo, Randall Stroope and Darmon Meader. In December of 2014 the choir performed Vivaldi’s Gloria in concert at the Church of the Holy Innocents in West Orange and has performed in concert at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Essex Fells.
During the spring semester the Caldwell University Chorale “tours,” singing for masses and church services in northern New Jersey and Manhattan. Recent tours have included Immaculate Heart of Mary (Wayne), St. John’s Episcopal Church and Immaculate Conception (Montclair), St. Cassian’s Roman Catholic Church (Upper Montclair), First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell and The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Manhattan.
During the 2012 season, the group was selected as the Cantorum Young Singers to perform with Schola Cantorum on Hudson in concerts at St. Paul the Apostle Church near Lincoln Center in NYC and at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Montclair. It was thrilling to be a part of the Manhattan premiere of the choral cantata, Thresholds by Andrea Clearfield, and to work with the composer in preparing the piece.
