WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
Our department prepares students for careers in a variety of fields by offering a challenging curriculum that emphasizes literature and writing. Please visit us in our offices in Werner Hall to find out more about our degree program and to learn about our many co-curricular activities.
Each year we sponsor poetry readings, a theatre trip and a student colloquium, and we encourage students who enjoy creative writing to submit their work to Calyx, our literary magazine. Several students also participate in a variety of discipline-related internships both on and off-campus. For more information about our courses, requirements, etc., follow the appropriate links on this page or stop by our offices.
We are always eager to meet with our majors, and we welcome the opportunity to share information about our department with new students.
“Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination and of the heart.”
