Web Standards Policies

Classifications of Webpages

Departments are not permitted to unilaterally create URLs or new web domain names in the name of Caldwell College without the awareness and express approval of Institutional Advancement.

Tier I Official Pages are pages that represent the college as a whole and do not represent a particular unit, department, or group. They are created by and reflect the policies of institutional and administrative authorities. These pages are developed and maintained by the respective administrative staff in association with the webmaster, and must comply to all web policies in form and content. Final approval is by Institutional Advancement only.

Tier I pages include any page that must comply with the college’s web standards and seek content approval prior to posting. These pages include the campus home page and events postings.

Tier II Official Pages are subpages of the Caldwell College website that represent individual departments, committees and offices. Examples include individual academic departments, Alumni Affairs, etc. These pages are developed by each department/organization individually, and each department/organization is responsible for compliance with web policies in form and content. Posting and web standard applications are done by the college webmaster but responsibility for content rests with the department head whose department the web page represents.

Tier II pages include any page that must comply with the college’s web standards, but content approval is not required prior to posting. This tier encapsulates most website pages, e.g., department pages. With these pages, the department head assumes the responsibility of assuring appropriate content.

Tier III Unofficial pages are personal pages that do not necessarily represent Caldwell College and belong to and are maintained by faculty, staff, or students. Examples include individual faculty web pages, clubs, organizations, student pages, etc. Their respective owners are responsible for their content, timeliness, and accuracy and adherence to web policies in terms of content only. Strongly suggested is that they also comply with stylistic guidelines, at least in terms of ease of use and accessibility issues.

Tier III pages are not required to comply with the college’s web standards, nor is the content approved prior to posting. Club websites and faculty web space are included in this category. The college hosts these web spaces as a mutually beneficial courtesy to the college community.

These standards are not intended to impinge on content development, but are an acknowledgement of the practical realities with respect to economies of scale, space, cost, workload, visual cohesion, navigation ease, generally accepted web conventions, technical limitations and/or requirements, layout continuity and identity, and legal compliance.

To ensure that that Information Technology is not relegated to the function of “official gatekeeper”, these guidelines are implemented so that content developers are aware, in the initial stages of development, of the specific technical requirements of web construction and the limitations on content. By utilizing Caldwell College’s web presence for personal web space development, the developer and/or office overseeing the development agrees to abide by these guidelines. Our heritage as a Dominican College and our mission requiring our students to act responsibly toward self and others is also applicable to faculty, staff and administration in the adherence of these guidelines.
