PureMessage: Email Anti-Virus/Spam Software
As of July 1, 2005 Caldwell College is using a software package called PureMessage to scan your e-mail for viruses and spam. The software scans all e-mail in your mailbox. If it finds something that it thinks is SPAM or a virus it will capture it and store it in your quarantine. If you have any messages that get captured as SPAM you will get a PureMessage Digest sent to your inbox. If you have messages sent that contain a virus you will get a message with the subject line "PureMessage has processes a suspicious mail". Below are directions on how to handle these messages.
If you have messages that are not being captured by PureMessage but you think they are SPAM you can forward that message to is-spam@sophos.com.
Conversely if you have messages being captured that you don't think are SPAM you can deliver that message to your inbox and forward it to not-spam@sophos.com.
PureMessage Digest
You will receive an e-mail like the one below to let you know you have something that was captured and is waiting for you to either deliver it to your in-box or delete it. The program generates these messages Monday - Wednesday - Friday starting at 10:00pm. Messages are held in quarantine for 10 days and then they are deleted starting with the oldest.

When you click on the link listed in the message it will take you to a web page that looks like this:

You then need to look at the sender, the subject and the spam score to decide if you want the message delivered or deleted. The higher the spam score the more likely the message is spam. If you want to have a message(s) delivered to your inbox you need to click on the check box on the left hand side and then click on 'Deliver.' The message(s) will disappear from your quarantine and be delivered to your inbox. To delete a message you need to follow the same steps but click on 'Delete' instead of 'Deliver.' If you want to select all the messages displayed on the screen at once click in the box next to 'From' like the picture below and then you can delete or deliver the messages. If you have more then one page of messages you will have to deal with each page separately.

The site below is displayed most likely because you have a newer PureMessage Digest in your inbox. If you see this page please check your e-mail to see if you have a newer message.

Virus Attachments
The message below is an example of what you will get if a message that was sent to you contains a virus. It tells you who sent you the message, the name of the attachment, the name of the virus that was detected and if it was able to be disinfected or not. Most viruses that are sent by e-mail are files that were written to be a virus and there is no way disinfect the file. If you have any question about files that PureMessage has captured as a virus please call the appropriate Help Desk.

Most of the time this message is just informational and you can just delete it. Once in a while you might get a file that can be cleaned and delivered to your inbox. You need to contact the Help Desk to have the message disinfected and delivered.
