Shane Manning: Emerging Leadership Day at Caldwell Spurred Him On To Leadership Roles
It was Emerging Leadership Day his freshman year that was pivotal in motivating Shane Manning to take on leadership roles on Caldwell’s campus. Sponsored by SGA and Student Activities, students who exemplified leadership qualities were nominated and then invited to attend a day of leadership workshops and a special honorary dinner. “Apparently someone saw something in me," Manning said.

A Biology major, Manning went on to become involved in the Student Activities Committee (SAC) planning committee. He also became Judicial Chair of the Student Government Association (SGA) and took part in many other activities and clubs. Through those involvements, he says he learned how to be an administrator, take care of responsibilities and manage people.

He appreciates the education is receiving at Caldwell and believes the liberal arts courses are very important.  When he first found out he had to take “all these liberal arts classes”, he thought it was going to be “a drag” and that it would be a lot of useless work. But instead he saw how beneficial the classes were and how they helped him “approach problems from a different angle.”

An international student from Jamaica, Manning has had 17 to 18 credits almost every semester and he overfills his schedule, purposely.  It is his own motivation tactic for his college life and one that some other students could probably learn from. “If I have nothing to do I lounge,” he says, so he “overfills” and then if he has to, cuts out from there.  His friends call him an overachiever.

Grateful to have been able to come to the U.S. and meet people from so many different cultures, he says his friends from Caldwell College are priceless. “I have friends from everywhere in the world”. When he first came to Caldwell all of the newness was a bit overwhelming, but there were “a few people here who lent a helping hand.”  And that was a really big deal in his life. “The small actions you do can impact people on a cosmic level.”  That has motivated him to try to help others when then have needed it.
A senior, Manning says the past several years at Caldwell have been the “most dynamic, influential, professional, educational, social” of his life. As for his future life after college, wherever his career path takes him, he says he’ll aim for the sky and hopefully fall on the clouds.  “My dream is to always be on top”.

THE MOST REWARDING THING I WAS INVOLVED IN AT CALDWELL COLLEGE WAS…

“I really have to say that the most rewarding experiences here at Caldwell were spending time and partying with the senior citizens over by Marion Manor across the street from the College. I am actually looking forward to next semester and the events that will definitely be planned for them.”  (The Marion Manor is a subsidized senior housing building located near campus that is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell.)
