Caldwell College was one of only six recipients to receive a $122,162 grant from the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education for a New Jersey Aim High Academy Initiative for high school students. The college is inviting high achieving high school students to apply for a 3-week, residential Summer College Program that will take place July 10 to July 29. Students who have just completed their junior year, are the first generation in their family to attend college (neither parent have an earned bachelors degree) and meet the academic requirements are invited to apply for the 'Summer College at Caldwell” (SCAC) at www.caldwell.edu/scac.
This unique opportunity is free to the student and funded by the US Department of Education, College Access Challenge Grant through the NJ Commission on Higher Education and by Caldwell College. Students will participate in a course that is science-math focused where they can earn three credits from Caldwell College upon satisfactory completion of classroom, laboratory and field work assignments. The objective of the course is to introduce students to selective scientific concepts and applications in an integrated approach that includes biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. This format will enable students to apply these concepts through laboratory exercises and analyzing real world issues. Field trips to Turtle Back Zoo, Liberty Science Center, Genesis Farm, Edison Museum and the Meadowlands Environmental Center will serve to reinforce the material.
One of the aims of the program is to help students improve their SAT scores through participation in SAT test taking strategies workshops.
The students will live in the college residence halls as an entry to college life and will be exposed to a comprehensive program featuring classes on topics such as Time Management, The College Search Process, Financial Aid, Picking a Major and Career goals.
The culminating experience will be a final poster board presentation and their parents, high school teachers, guidance counselors and principals will be invited to attend the presentation and celebration.
